Lorenzo - I'd give Hiper another try. I looked yesterday for car hire in PP for March 2020 and their website showed no availability for anything. But this evening, they offer a good choice. It also gave an adoption for PP pickup/Palma airport return (albeit by shuttlebus).

Success at last with the hire car booking in April 2020! :) We had been trying to collect the hire car from the office in the port at 14.00 hours on 27th April 2020 - and the repeated messages 'no cars available' simply showed up each time on the screen. After phoning their help line, it turns out that this is because the Hiper office in Puerto Pollensa is closed at that time. siesta time!

We'll be collecting the car at 17.00 hours now instead and the booking has gone through just as we wanted. As an added bonus, it is nice to see that Hiper don't charge any extra fees for dropping the hire car back to their office near Palma airport and second driver is free also. :)

We’ve just booked a car for January with Gold Car for the princely sum of £9 for a week!!

Aaaaagh I hear you all cry not the dreaded Gold Car, but if you insist you don’t want their insurance they will take a €1500 marker as a deposit and this would only be charged if there was any damage or you had an accident. Job done :)

I had the worst experience ever with Goldcar in October. We took a chance as the price was so good. Got to the kiosk and said no to their insurance and the guy just wouldn’t take no for an answer. He ended up telling me I was being rude and told me to stand aside while I calmed down and then he would serve me. At this point my husband steps in to say that is not how to treat customers. My husband had been on his phone and so had it it in his hand. The Goldcar employee starts telling him “stop taking pictures of me, I will call the police”. A female employee then tells both me and my husband “you’ve got problems”. My husband argued back at them and then they said sorry you can’t have a car from us. At this point we had paid the fuel deposit, car hire and the insurance deposit of €1500.
It actually made me cry and so we agreed to leave it and asked for a refund. This was not immediately and to date they have never refunded the original cost of the car hire. I had to complain to head office to get any money back from them. They did apologise via email but the experience was traumatic. I went next door to Sixt, and hired a car no problem.
There was an interesting article in The Guardian last week about Goldcar. Honestly never, ever again. It was the worst experience ever! Be careful - I wouldn’t want anyone on here to experience what we did, no one nice deserves it!

I know a lot of people have had terrible experiences with Goldcar but we’ve used them 3 or 4 times a year for about 20 years and never had a problem. Yes they get really pushy trying to flog their insurance but we just keep saying no thanks and they give up eventually

Sorry to hear about your experience it sounds dreadful. I don’t understand though when all the paperwork had been done and the 1500€ deposit paid surely you were at at the point of getting the car! Why did they refuse to give it to you?

There was no reason - they simply were not making enough money from their ultra cheap deal like yours. It was awful and I would never use them again but each to their own and I appreciate that. That was the third time we had hired from them, but it will be the last!

Looking forward to your report - I have given up on the on airport rental companies and use only Hiper in Can Pastilla now but if the prices are competitive then I would consider using Goldcar.

Tiggy I’ve used them for over 20 years without a problem. We always refuse their insurance and have never had anything more than a bit of persistence from them while they try and talk us into it! We check the car all over and if we find any scratches, which haven’t been noted by them, we report and photograph before we leave the airport. We pay for a full tank of petrol but then return the car full, and the money is refunded almost immediately. Our last trip in October was €9 plus what ever petrol we used :)

I normally use SIXT, but a friend of mine has been told that Centauro are an excellent alternative as well.

I have booked with Hiper for the first three weeks in July for €300 - I couldn’t believe the price!
