Hi, wondered if anyone could tell me if the Anchor bar/restaurant is still on the road by the Romantica hotel? and still run by the same man? Haven't been to PP for acouple of years but recall having pretty good suppers there and most reasonable. Thanks in anticipation of a reply or two?

Had lunch here after walking past it for donkeys years. At €8,50 for menu del dia it is not only fantastic value but also fantastic food. A definite reccomend

Sorry to be a killjoy but we had a meal there ( well should say we ordered one but couldn't eat it:eek:) last October and it was the worst meal ever in PP or anywhere else probably. Maybe we were just unlucky and it was a bad night but as there are so many other places to choose from - we shan't be going back;)

Jeezo Rosie, isn't it amazing how we all have different impressions of places?

After going to El ancla a couple of days ago we are presently sitting here having had a dip in the pollypark pool. Iv had the mdd which was chickpea soup, followed by lamb shank and I'm hoping lemon meringue pie. The wee man had a cheese and ham toastie. It has been fabulous!

It's the type of place which serves wholesome hearty food and with a bottle of estrella at €1.50 I could see myself sitting here for a while!

Edit to say for your €8.50 you also get a basket of bread, Ali oli and a plate of olives and a drink. How can they do it?

Not on Saturdays ( usually!) think it's a great place, superb location food usually good but can sometimes be random

Yes a definite vote in favour of El Ancla - best paella and cheery service!

Leo still owns El Ancla. His father was called Felipe but he passed away many years ago. It has also been many years ago since Toni worked there, he left to run his own bar but it failed and he has been working in Stay for quite a few years now.

El ancl

El Ancla is indeed still open .Next door to the Romantic

Although there are loads of good reviews our only eating experience there (last October) was bad - to say the least. The food was inedible:(

Have lost count of the number of meals i have had in El Ancla over the years, can honestly say that i have never had a bad one. In my opinion they do the best paella in the Port, the lamb and the duck in orange are both fantastic and large. If you are in a hurry though, go somewhere else because Leo is a very laid back guy and so is the service which is great because it gives you time to take in the view of the "Puppy in the Mountain" ;):D.

This is the problem with asking a broad question about the quality of food. It is a very subjective question. What is good for one person may be not so good for others. "One mans meat is another mans poison" comes to mind.

When broad statements are made about an experience, sometimes many months ago, it can be devastating for the restaurant concerned.

I think that when a question like this is posted the responses should be to point to, and to read, the many reviews that must have been made, and if giving an opinion, back it up with fact: What was wrong, how the restaurant tried to put it right, the outcome etc., not just a brief statement of opinion without detail of why it was good or bad.

There are many long time members of this forum who must have had bad meals at some point in some of the "better" restaurants, yet would not hesitate to go back!

Good luck with your visit Katsmum, and Rosie, thank you for posting but can we have a more detailed response so that we can make a more informed choice.

Thank you Sparky for coming to the rescue of a well established family run restaurant, who apparently did not satisfy at that time and who is bound to make a mistake, once in a while.

I did give a detailed review after we visited the restaurant last October having read such good reports.

We were the only people in the restaurant - apart from one other couple. We ordered grilled vegetables to start and my husband ordered grilled sole for his main course - sorry I cant remember my main now. When the 'grilled vegetables' arrived we just stared at this big bowl of boiled diced vegetables swimming in grease. We asked the waiter if there was a mistake as we had ordered grilled veg - he brought the manager (I think) over and he said that is how vegetables are grilled in Mallorca! (We had had delicious grilled veg in La Goleta a few nights earlier, so we were a bit bemused when he said this) Although we tried a couple of mouthfuls - we couldn't eat them - not grilled and revolting. As I said, I cant remember my main (although I remember it wasnt very good) but my husbands 'grilled' sole had been fried and was also very greasy. We paid and left.

I always try to give fair restaurant reports and can only comment on our own experiences - I've said before - 'one man's meat' etc.;) And I do not believe anyone could have praised the food - had they been offered what we were.

Maybe it just an 'off' night but I can only speak as I found:)

That's better, a link to your original review or, this as your first comment and maybe, if you could have found them, links to other reviews give the opportunity of a valid balanced appraisal. Thank you Rosie. :D
Looking forward to reading more reviews.

Hi Sparky you are correct, tried the name pepe to see if I could catch you out,but you are obviously on the ball with information. Spent many happy times at Ancla with "Miguel" and Carol and always had good banter with Felipe. Leo never seemed to get out of first gear when in the restaurant. Happy Times. MAJORCA VETERAN
