Our house insurance is coming up for renewal and I thought that I would shop around.

Can anyone recommend any English speaking insurance company or broker?

We are insured through Hiscox here in UK for our villa in Pollensa. We have found them to be very good. Not sure if they are the cheapest though.

Worth going into Bancaja in the Port. Fabio speaks excellent English and is very helpful.

There is a lady called Anna at IDEAL property Management ( just near the sports centre ) who can arrange good value insurance all paperwork in english

I use Lorente Seguros on Joan XX111, 95(building) 1 (floor) A (office) (main PP old town road) near Marche rent a bike and the lights.

I have a 4 bed/2 bath apt and it cost me this year 255 euros (it has gone up a lot in the past 2-3 years - used to be around 80, but she did say we were under insured)

How does that compare?

Have to say though that the standard of payout is far less than you would expect in the UK - they will only do the bare minimum. Not just this company but in general - wether it is because we do not understand the system and language, I don't know.

Also it needs to be remembered that if you rent your property to holiday makers then it is best to ensure that is considered in your quote. They also you are asked how many weeks the property remains empty. This is where Hiscox came into their own. They cater for overseas rental properties and ask all the relevant questions to ensure cover is as it should be. Not the cheapest, i'm sure but what is the point of buying the cheapest if they walk away with excuses when you need them!

Thank you Eleanor. We used to use Hiscox for our house in England and found them very helpful. However in these days of price comparison websites we have managed to reduce our premium quite a bit.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. We have a 450m2 house in Alcanada and we are paying €720 currently. (we don't rent out).We have had a couple of claims for storm damage and they have paid out in full and relatively quickly. The agent we used for this is based in Palma and no longer has any English speaking staff so communication is difficult.

I have a quote from Lineas Directe at €347 and am tempted but am I going from a good one to a bad one?

Does anyone have any experience of claims in Mallorca with Lineas Directe. My daughter had a very bad experience with Direct Line in UK and only got them to pay after a judgement from the Ombudsman.

Hiscox no longer insure overseas property and for the past year we went through our bank to insure our villa. We have had a problem with them not paying out on a claim as the person causing damage didn't leave their name! We therefore do not want to renew with them.
Following on from the posts above I wondered if anyone might have a suggestion of a good English speaking company to contact or a UK company which will insure overseas?

Eleanor we have not had to make a claim here but we found the lady at AXA-Vives Assegurances which is in C/Vicente Buades very helpful and she speaks excellent English. The telephone number is 971 86 53 47, i will try to find an email address for you :).

AXA-Vives Assegurances - waiting for their quote to come through by email but the exercise of getting quotes is a minefield! Plus some of the quotes coming through are so expensive. I'm quite shocked!

Linea Directa - Only used them for car insurance but they have a dedicated English speaking team and all the policies are printed in English, I would imagine it would be worthwhile ringing for a quote. I'm sure somebody local could obtain the phone number for you, I only have the number for car insurance, which is: 902 123 309

Thanks very much Whaley I have found their website and am waiting for a quote from them. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Linea Directa - just to help others I found that the number Whaley kindly gave to me took me to a fax machine. If you go to their website the only number showing isn't recognised from the UK. I was unable to find an alternative. If you press on to quote it takes you to a form asking for your phone number to call you back. The form will not accept number of digits for a uk or mobile number! So I placed my number in the section asking for my name and it worked - someone called me back asking to speak to Mr. Five! (the first digit of my home number!!)

This is slightly off topic, but very useful information.

Earlier this year our house and contents were destroyed in UK by two burst pipes in the loft. Total claim is now in excess of £180K. We used AXA to insure the contents and Liverpool Victoria for the buildings. Both these companies have been truly excellent in handling our claims. Couldn't praise them highly enough.

Buying insurance is one thing and then claiming is another.

I was going to 'like' your post Alcanadakid but couldn't as what an awful experience for you. I am so pleased that your insurance has been good and hope that your home is sorted asap.

You are so right in what you say about insurance, claiming and if or not they pay out. We are still fighting our insurance which we bought via our Spanish bank a year on. Someone drove into our wall causing much damage. The insurance is refusing to pay out as we do not have a 'lead' for them to chase! My husband asked if (God Forbid) we had someone break in would we not be covered if they failed to sign the visitors book!

This has been a real pain plus they are now saying they should have been given 2 months notice that we didn't intend to renew with them!! Yes right!!

Anyway after much homework and thanks to all for suggestions, I have taken a policy with Intersure. They are based in UK but have a specialist division for overseas property and renting out. Not the cheapest but seem to cover most things. Fingers crossed we won't have need to claim! What a minefield this exercise has shown.

Glad you got that sorted Eleanor, fingers crossed that you never have to make a claim :).

Hi Sparky, A year on and doesn't time fly! I just wondered if you had the email address for AXA as can't get through on the phone. Might just be that they are not available at weekends of course!

Any other suggestions for home insurance appreciated. Anyone thinking of Intasure just DON"T do it and pm me!
