Learning the language

I would be grateful to those of you who are lucky enough to have either lived, currently live or just spend a lot of time in PP to share with me how you have fared with speaking spanish.
What were the main barriers to learning spanish ? How long does it take to become fluent ?. Are the locals helpful ?

I am moving to Pollensa in August 07 (4 weeks time) and know the basics so any advice would be gratefully received.
I will need to get to a good grasp on the language as my 2 young children will be going to one of the local schools so I imagine all correspondance with the school will be done in spanish.

Hi Miguel - do have a look at this post p221.ezboard.com/fpollensaforumfrm24.showMessage?topicID=220.topic as you will find that the schools actually teach in Catalan & the primary language in Mallorca is Mallorquin, a dialect of Catalan. Of course Spanish is spoken & is very useful but you should be appear of Mallorquin/Catalan too.
