New Road Plans

Sorry to hear you were misled about the road three years ago Belladona. When we were looking to buy an apartment in 2003, at least three estate agents told us of the road's imminence and our solicitor also checked the proximity of the road in relation to our eventual purchase. Maybe there is a distiction to be drawn between friends and business aquaintances!

It would be a very sad day if they did get rid of the coast road. When we arrive in Mallorca, the journey always seems really long but as soon as we turn off the roundabout, pass the stinky bit, then that coast road is lovely. You really feel like you are home.

I am not sure how they can say that by removing this, they are reclaiming the beach. The worse thing they did to the beach was changing the natural shoreline down at the Llenaire end. When we first starting going to PP, that was all just pebbles and really short - the first year we arrived and saw the huge beach with all the sun shades, was heartbreaking. Sorry, we are not sun worshippers, only go down to the beach for a swim first thing in the morning or at the end of the day when it is lovely and quiet.

I am not sure about pedestrianising the front either. I think that the port at Alcudia lost a lot of its charm when they pedestrianised it.

As others have said, we are not locals, so can't really say anything but I just despair that they are slowing turning PP it into another identikit resort that could be anywhere.

Why can't someone just sit back and look at why PP is so popular and rather than try and improve it, leave it alone. That's why so many people like it.

Hello everyne, On the information I have I agree that they are in fact TWO PROJECTS. The first is that when the final stage of the by pass is completed and officially openened (another reason for the councillors to drink cava with our taxes) the Mayor has stated that he wishes to commence an `experiment´of closing part of the sea front to traffic. The area in question runs from Llennaire to the Canal/Tolos Bar not any further. This is due to the importance of traffic reaching the Marina, the busy car park, the excursion coaches from across the Island reaching the Formentor Boat and the public bus service and the taxi rank. As is soooo often the case, it seems he has not thought the project through carefully enough as the council are unable to come up with clear ideas as to how tourists can reach hotels like the Uyal, Pollential and Romantic - especially in 55 seater coaches!! The article states that there is another road providing access behind but those of you familiar with the area will no that this is not the case. Several ideas have been tossed around by the council in their wisdom - including expecting people to walk 50-100m with suitcase (??) to allowing limited access to coaches and taxis or a restricted hours that traffic can pass by this area. With just about one month to go to the `BIG OPENING´there is obviously lots of details to clear up.
The other project comes from the department of `costas´which controls and preserves the coastline and that is closing the main road into PP from Alcudia. An idea that the Pollensa council are not in agreement with at present for two main reasons (and lots of other ones) which is that it may isolate Port de Pollença even more than it currently is and also that a new road will have to be built through valuable `rustic/Non building land´so the council queries the environmental benefits involved. . . . . Naturally lots and lots of meetings are going on behind the scenes and different bodies and associations are fighting their corner for the best outcome for Port de Pollenca and its residents. Only time will tell whether the right decisions will be made . . . .. Most of those of us that remember when the buses and cars went along infront of the Daina would say Port de Pollença improved with the pedestrian area. I think Alcudia has improved fantatically since it became pedestrianised - safer, quieter and cleaner. What I cannot agree with is a half and half as I think this will be an accident waiting to happen - i.e. pedestrianized but taxis or buses appearing from nowhere to zoom along with clients arriving from airport .
Lots to discuss but of course the decisions are not up to us - although as I have said many times, input can always be given in the local tourist information centre.

Thanks JMD for a very helpful and thorough explanation. We're out June/July so it will be interesting to see if the pedestrianisation idea does materialise. I had wondered also how the coaches would reach the hotels.
If you get to know anything more please post as this seems to be quite an emotive subject.

It would be great shame to lose the road into PP from Alcudia. I always insist on driving that way in when we arrive (much to my wife's annoyance).

It's also a great cycle along the coast in the mornings or evenings.PP-Alcuidia-Bonaire and back in less than an hour is my daily tonic.

Like most members, I wish they would leave the place alone. Pedestrianisation can sanitise a place if you are not careful.

I think you will find that IF and then WHEN they did close the main sea road between Alcudia and Port de Pollensa you will still be able to cyle out there - they wish to protect the area - back to nature etc.etc. and encourage people to stroll and cycle along the beach - the windsurfers will also still be able to gain access to this area - and of course this incorporates the area of marshland which is so popular with the bird watchers so they will be happy. However, it seems Costas have had this plan up their sleeve for a while but the Pollença councillors are not convinced yet so we could have many years of discussions - lets face it the `by pass´has taken approx. 10years to materialize.
I promise to keep everyone informed if I hear anymore clear facts.

MAN KILLED IN CRASH

A27-year-old member of the Guardia Civil was killed in the early hours of yesterday after being involved in a head-on collision with a taxi on the road between the Port of Pollensa and Alcudia.

The three people traveling in the taxi suffered serious injuries and were all being treated in hospitals in Inca and Palma yesterday.
The exact cause of the tragic accident has yet to be confirmed but the crash happened just after 2am near the Club Pollentia along the sea front stretch of road which the government would look to scrap and replace with an extended beach.

The emergency services and police responded to the accident quickly but paramedics could not save the young Guardia Civil who was driving a Ford Escort and he died at the scene. The 53-year-old taxi driver and his two Italian passengers aged 29 and 40 were also attended at the scene before being rushed to hospital. Yesterday, an articulated lorry flipped over and rolled down the embankment along the link road between Porreres and the Manacor dual carriage way but no serious injuries were reported and in Palma, the Local Police are hunting the drivers or owners of five vehicles which were abandoned after being involved in five separate accidents on Friday night.

Hi SWS, i just read that, how tragic another life lost on the roads in the Puerto Pollensa area. I hope the injured driver and tourists make a full and speedy recovery.
