I think what we are all forgetting here guys is that the new Tex Mex is replacing a kebab shop!!!!!!

Surely everybody must agree that that is progress or is it just the TM guy that people on here dont like

Hoopy, This is the guy who was planning to put ten foot Red Indians outside his restaurant on the seafront, NOBODY wants to see that The locals were some of the most vioceferous and he changed his mind, he's a business man and business men are there to make money, no problem with that. Some people prefer his type of restaurants and good luck to them, but the pricing policy is very misleading, the final bill will more often than not be heftier than some of the more established restaurants, it's fast food, but it's not cheap food.

A number of winters ago I was over and PP had a particularly bad storm, poor La Lonja was badly damaged beyond repair, did they decide to replace it with a monument to modern commercial thinking? No they just built another La Lonja.

It seems to me that there is a lot of agreement here. Most of us have been coming to PP for many years and we know what we like about it. Its got beautiful beaches, welcoming locals ,the wonderful pine walk, fabulous facilities on the water, its not too big( this in part to the amazing foresight of previous municipal councils who didn't allow developments to go to high), and it has good mix of restaurants to meet everyones needs. The concerns that have been expressed are about where its going ? Even Hoopy, recognising that tacky corner exists in the square, would I'm sure not want it to become a tacky port which is most peoples concern, I'm sure we all probably agree on that as well. Finally whatever your viewpoint we can also probably agree that there is little we can do to stop market forces creating whatever the future has in store. To this end I take satisfaction that the Tex Mex with the Indian didn't last 5 minutes on the corner of Pine Walk, and the current restaurant in its place is no different to most along the front line. Whilst a particular fan , particularly in the winter of the kebab shop, it doesn't seem to me that replacing it with a TexMex right next door to a Burger King is marking a huge turning point in the character of the port. The expansion of Brisas Marina, the opening of C'an Josep, the refurbishment of Los Faroles, the opening of Casa Vila are all much in keeping with the status quo and all have happened in the past few years. I trust that the natural order of events will be maintained and that if the european economy ever improves we will see more new and exciting eateries open up which we can all enjoy.

Many of them like to eat a variety of foods, the kind of stuff they don't eat at home, it isn't just the tourists who go to the Indian, Chinese, BK and Tex Mex. I know quite a few that love a good old Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding as well .

I agree with you Chelseadons and i also think that what tends to be forgotten on the forum is that the local population are also a driving force in whatever type of eateries survive. Many of them like to eat a variety of foods, the kind of stuff they don't eat at home, it isn't just the tourists who go to the Indian, Chinese, BK and Tex Mex. I know quite a few that love a good old Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding as well .

How True, I found it ironic when the news broke about a kebab shop opening next to burger king, that once it got going, more often than not it was full of locals

Re Tex mex being cheap,,, It came as no suprise that his venture failed when the fishermans cottage was converted to texmex.
I can still recall the utter shock on observing his tex mex meals priced up at 18-25 euros a plate.


and last but not least, the good old all inclusive. If you take the idea that this is good then you won't have to bother posting opinions on restaurants because there won't be any. Doubt what I'm saying. Then you need to know the people that run the places next to the pollensa park. They are fighting for their very existance and in one case Losing.

Demographics will improve this year, first year for I think for about 10 years we're not coming, off to Girne in Northern Cyprus, much cheaper!!

Well I don't know what's kept me coming here for decades but it was not based on being cheap or I would have been off years ago.

Now forgive me if I'm missing something Bigjohn, but the way you have worded you're post, it's as if it took you ten years to realise there was somewhere cheaper.

One thing I've always found strange is why the Brits seem to have an inexhaustible appetite for Tex Mex food while on holiday - it isn't as if the UK is particularly well provided with restaurants catering to this need, in my town of 100,000 inhabitants there isn't a single Tex Mex - and no demand for one, as far as I am aware. I guess at some time there must have been some market research done which said tourists craved Tex Mex cuisine - they just didn't know it yet...

Just one comment - which is in no way an endorsement of the Tex Mex takeover - but, in these difficult economic times, I would rather see a restaurant which is open and busy, albeit tacky and selling food that I don't personally want to eat, than one which is closed and boarded up. That can only give a resort a bad name.

When I first went to Spain all those years ago all I would eat was Spanish omelette, I was terrified to try any of the local food, I soon learned, and oh what a joy! Maybe if more Brits would be a little more adventurous they'd be in for a very pleasant surprise!

Kate, The main Tex-Mex is in a lovely location, with the tables right out to the sea, it will always pull them in. Not so sure about the new one, next to Burger King? Is there a difference? I really don't know.

Im sure big John can answer for himself but 10 years ago I would reckon people had more disposable income than they do now. People IMO are now looking for more value for their £ and the AI's, Turkeys and Cyprus's of this world are growing in popularity.

Can only say again about AI's. God help any resort where that becomes the norm. Fact, It's no good for local buisiness, or jobs. Quite ironic really that the place that has done the most damage to local restaurants, should not even be there. Still pays the yearly fine to enable him to keep going.You could not make it up.
