Pollensa the great exception to the holiday rentals' rule » Balearics » News » Majorca Daily Bulletin

In 36 of Majorca's 53 municipalities, the number of authorised holiday rentals' places exceeds the number of hotel places. Heading the list is Pollensa, where there are 8,999 rentals' places - the highest by some margin - and 7,134 hotel places.

Pollensa is the only municipality which can be described as being one of Majorca's main tourist destinations where there is such a balance. It has long been appreciated that Pollensa is highly dependent on holiday rental accommodation, and this dependence is in part due to what occurred some thirty or so years ago. Hotel overbooking, especially in Cala San Vicente, created a boom in rental accommodation, and the trend has never been reversed.

There was a time, roughly twenty years back, when Pollensa and other parts of the north as well as Cala d'Or were the only real centres of holiday rentals. These are now to be found in all municipalities. ...

The figures can be considered significant, given the way in which the government's legislation may pan out in terms of the allocation of rentals' places. In Pollensa, where the former mayor, Tomeu Cifre, attempted in vain to get the Partido Popular government to re-think its 2012 tourism law and clauses related to holiday rentals, there may well be some nervousness regarding the way in which the allocation is made.

Bus services from the airport to tourist resorts to start this year » Balearics » News » Majorca Daily Bulletin

Regional transport minister Marc Pons has announced that the government intends creating bus services which directly connect Palma airport with the main tourism centres on the island.

Pons says that these services are expected to start in May. They will run throughout the main season, i.e. up to October. The government is currently negotiating with bus companies regarding five routes: Alcudia/Can Picafort; Cala d'Or/Porto Petro; Cala Millor; Magalluf; Santa Ponsa. The services will run every hour or ninety minutes, and it is anticipated that more than a million passengers will use them.

Last year they succeeded in closing down a well known Puerto Pollensa / Airport shuttle service.
 
It does seem strange they will not serve PP which I thought was quite a major resort
 
I guess it is because there is already a pretty good service, albeit via Palma.

I'd even call it a great service GG...especially if you are only carrying hand luggage and, like us, like to spend time in beautiful Palma.

I would assume that the service is based on the amount of hotel beds in the area to which the buses are going, which aren´t all that numerous in Puerto Pollensa / Pollensa.

Also that they will probably assume that anyone going to Puerto Pollensa will be able to catch the Alcudia / PP bus.

Transport minister Marc Pons responded to criticisms of the new bus services to tourist resorts by observing that he understands that some sectors will disagree with the services. There are spaces for debate, he noted, and for the continuation of working together.

The announcement of five summer season bus services for direct routes from the airport to certain tourist resorts seems certain to result in protests by taxi drivers that will start next month.

The taxi drivers argue that the bus services are unnecessary, that they will duplicate services already available and put at risk the employment of over 2,000 people. They calculate that there will be losses of between ten and thirty per cent.

Not all drivers are opposed. Some see the buses as a further form of competition, which means a need to improve conditions regarding taxi operations and offer better service. Others believe that car-rental is the main enemy and that a bus service is something that should be available.

Alternativa complaining about Pollensa beaches' play areas » Balearics » News » Majorca Daily Bulletin

The Alternativa per Pollença party has denounced the repeated failure to comply with contractual obligations for the provision of children's play areas on Puerto Pollensa's beaches. The party is therefore critical of the residents' association which holds the contract and apparently installed only two play areas last year when there should have been ten.

The association's president, Miquel Cifre, says that these will be installed at the start of the season in April and that they will be of the most up-to-date style. He adds that the delay in the awarding of the concessions for the beaches last year meant that certain facilities had to be prioritised over others. Everything will be in place this year, including the the remaining play areas, he insists.

Presumably this is in response to the EU ruling that there cannot be subsidies on the railway for residents.

The anti-corruption prosecution service is investigating what it claims could have been systematic fraud in respect of legalising planning infringements in Pollensa. The prosecutor, Juan Carrau, is looking into records that date back to 2004. ...

At the heart of the investigation are payments of 20% of the valuation of works for which proceedings were opened to legalise them. The total value of alleged fraud is put at 169 million euros.

Fire in PP today?

Reports of a fire today in a hostal in PP, anyone heard anything??
 
I saw this on the police FB page, it says it was a small fire and was dealt with quickly, looks like it could be in the Bellavista.
