British qualified cruise ship captains are also at threat

Brexit is threatening to sink the British yachting and nautical industries in the Balearics with a hugely damaging impact on the local economy.

British commercial skipper and Royal Yacht Association instructor Martin Whyte, who ran a sailing and sea training school in Alcudia for 15 years, until earlier this year, has been forced to close his yachting businesses in Mallorca because British yachting qualifications, across the board from skippers to stewards, crew and engineers are no longer recognised as a result of Brexit.

...
“As of January 1, The authorities in Mallorca no longer recognise British Marine Qualifications.

“In short and as a starter, any British person with a boat in Balearic waters who holds a UK qualifications to skipper it no longer has a qualification recognised here and may be treated in the same way as someone without a license caught driving a car.

“This is a disaster for all British boat owners and their options are to either get a Spanish qualified skipper, pass their Spanish maritime exams or take their boat and leave, although technically they are no longer permitted to even move it from its berth.

Following our article on new yachting regulations in the Balearics post Brexit, the Royal Yachting Association sent us the following statement:

"In Spain, the skipper of a vessel is required to have evidence of competence, and the Spanish Authorities may wish to inspect it.

"Since 1 January 2021, the UK is a third country and will be treated as such by EU Member States. As a result RYA certificates are no longer accepted for operating a Spanish flagged boat (including bareboat charter) on the basis of the UK being an EU / EEA Member State. In addition, RYA certificates are no longer listed in Annex IX of Spanish Royal Decree 875/2014, This lists foreign flag state certificates which Spain recognises for the operation of Spanish flagged vessels.

"However, RYA certificates should be accepted for a British Citizen operating a UK flagged vessel. Although Spain has not adopted UNECE Resolution 40 concerning recognition of the ICC, the ICC is recommended and valid for British Citizens operating UK flagged vessels."

The Bulletin has learnt that local nautical associations and companies are working with the Spanish authorities to get the ruling changed so that RYA qualifications are accepted.

The Reuben brothers, with a personal wealth of 16 billion pounds, have quietly gone on a spending spree on Mallorca buying coastline plots across the island. On Friday they announced that they had bought two more plots. The first plot is around 165 hectares and is close to Pollensa with 3.5 kilometre of sea frontage, ...

If every cloud does have a silver lining, well there is certainly a silver lining around Pollensa and the port thanks to the charity PollençaCARES. This was set up last May by long-time Austrian resident Martina Singer and seven other local women from various nationalities: Claire Trelford, Dana Bena, Karin v. Pölnitz, Liz Barratt-Brown, Magdalena Seguí Cerdà, Mo Henkel and Sally Everist.

...
“So, we set about focusing on the food bank and also got involved with helping the local nuns, Las Monjas, who have a charity, and then Hope, a German charity which has its eighth food bank in Pollensa; that opened at the end of January.

“They give us a ‘shopping list’ of produce they need, numbers of packs of cheese, loaves of bread, whatever, and we go off, raise the funds and return with the products they need the most. We also run a butane gas return help service - literally anything we can to help make people’s lives easier.

“We’ve also had the great support of an excellent German vegan restaurant in the port, Bellaverde. They spent much of the winter cooking great healthy meals every Sunday for those who were in need of a hot wholesome meal, but now they have stopped temporarily as they intend to open for the season.

“So the girls and I have been helping them get ready to reopen by sorting out the garden, redecorating, anything we can to pay them back for the great support they have provided us and the local community.

“One thing we have noticed is that, before the pandemic, lots of expatriates lived in their own bubbles. But they’ve been extremely quick to come out and help and engage with the local community like never before, and it’s really helped to create a huge sense of collective community and solidarity like we’ve never seen before. I know it’s going to last.
...

“The whole thing has certainly made the world a smaller place, broken down many social boundaries and brought communities closer together - as we have seen here in Pollensa. Before, many people were living parallel lives, but now we’re all working as one. It’s been a real eye-opener, a moving experience.

Did anyone see that competition in the Mallorca Daily Bulletin recently, offering a night at The Sis Pins in June. The question was, something like....who was the famous writer that wrote about Pollensa, which as all Pollensa addicts know, was Agatha Christie.

Anyway.....I got an email yesterday to say I'd won! :D

Brilliant, have you stayed there before? The views from the upper front rooms are amazing

They'll probably put me in the cupboard under the stairs! (we did stay at the top of the Capri with sea view once though)

I must admit I didn't notice the June dates until I rechecked the comp details. I am hoping to come over on 9/6 for just five days, by myself, due to all the flight cancellations to sort a few things out and the next flight back is a week later! so 5 days or 13. It has to be 5, as I'm coming back 4/7 with some pals.

Rockape, I was wondering who won. Well Done

Thanks Lollipop....I had an email saying I'd won a few days back and that they'd be in touch, but not heard anything yet....... and the clock is ticking!

Tourist information had returned to where it had used to be

Over the past year or so, my email inbox has not been getting messages from the Puerto Pollensa tourist information office. This is because there has been no information to give. But this week there was a message. The new tourist information office was reopening. Tourist information had returned to where it had used to be.

An array of councillors was therefore gathered outside the building to mark the occasion....

...
Tomeu also said that the office is the “nerve centre of Puerto Pollensa and a place where people can receive information about the municipality”. Yes, Tomeu, local information is precisely the purpose of a tourist information office. Maybe it will be inundated with requests for information about the Formentor traffic restrictions.
