Editorial: A tourist tax
By Jason Moore
Let the tourists pay, because afterall they can´t vote, appears to be the opinion of some in the Balearics at the moment.
But unfortunately, tourists can vote, they can vote to go somewhere else. This is why I am deeply opposed to any ill-conceived tourist tax which sends out the wrong message.
Let us remember that thanks to tourism, we have a good standard of living in these islands. The tourist industry employs thousands of people and generates billions of euros for the local economy.
Now, the two parties which are set to form the left wing coalition which will govern these islands are pushing for a levy on tourists.
I would warn that this is a dangerous game. A tourist tax can very easily send out the wrong message. Everyone must support the idea from hoteliers to tourists. Also, the tourists who are forced to pay the levy must also see the benefits in better resorts and facilities.
If it is introduced wrongly then it will give the impression that the Balearic government just wants to penalise the poor old tourist, who already pays enough for their break in the sun.
It might be a better idea if the Balearic government find a better way to increase tax receipts.
Perhaps a tax on hotels and apartment complexes which could then be passed on to tourists?
I don´t know but what concerns me is anything which could hit our principal industry which is vital for the local economy.
Mess with the tourist industry at your peril, the dangers are enormous.
This summer will be warmer than last year
Get set for a long and warm summer, according to the Palma Met Office which announced yesterday that this summer would be slightly warmer than last year.
According to the Palma Met Office the Balearics will be hotter than the mainland.
This week the temperatures are expected to rise on the island as the summer season gets into full swing.
“It will certainly be beach weather in the Balearics,” said a spokesperson for the Palma Met Office yesterday.
Tourist police ready for summer action.
A total of 29 municipalities in the Balearics will be able to call on the Tourist Police Service (SPAT) this summer; 54 officers work for this service which seeks to prevent crimes that affect tourists and they will be on duty until 30 September (having started on 1 June). Of the 54 officers, 44 will operate in 20 Majorcan towns, seven in the seven Minorcan municipalities with three in Sant Joan and Santa Eularia in Ibiza.
SPAT was introduced as a pilot project in the summer of 2013 in Andratx and following good results there it was expanded into 19 more towns in 2014: Alcudia, Bunyola, Costitx, Deya, Esporles, Maria de la Salut, Pollensa, Santa Margalida, Ses Salines, Soller, Son Servera and Vilafranca de Bonany in Majorca as well as in Alaior, Ciutadella, Es Castell, Ferreries, Mahon and Sant Lluis in Minorca and Santa Eularia in Ibiza.
This summer the service will now also be available in Estellancs, Inca, Mancor de la Vall, Muro, Porreres and Sa Pobla (in Majorca) and Es Mercadal in Minorca and Sant Joan de Labritja in Ibiza. Aspects of the service in preventing crimes involving tourists include a personalised approach to advising tourists, improving relationships with hotels and other establishments and strengthening the co-ordination between different security forces.
