Other favourite places on the island

Having only ever stayed in PP on the island,and finding the island very extremely beautiful,could any body recommend other parts of the island that they may have stayed in and liked or some that they have found not so nice.

I can obviously only speak about the parts I know so here goes. There are some stunning places up in the mountains - for example Soller is worth a visit, Deya is a bit gucci these days but quite breathtakingly beautiful and Banyulbufar is also a nice little village. Elsewhere, Palma is a lovely city but I have never enjoyed the areas around it. The Andraitx area is very elegant and worth a look. I've never been a huge fan of Cala D'or but plenty of people are. I know very little about anywhere else on the island but I hope this helps!

PS The Arta area is very good if you play golf!!

The area around Soller is beautiful as Alcanada says and well worth a trip, close by is the village of Fornalutx ( Spell ????) which is charming. We then go to Valledemossa which is lovely, full of interesting things to look at and plenty of super places for coffee or a meal. The caves at Arta are worth going to, when you come out from them the view of the bay is gorgeous. The town itself is very nice and I think that Tuesday is market day which is worth visiting

Thanks for your replies it was cala dor i had in mind as along with PP it seems to have the most rentable properties,i am not keen on alcudia and what i have seen of Andratx,seems to go along with your description,its pricey,any one know anything about Santa ponsa?.Thanks to both replies i didn't know there was caves in arta will definately go there have done the caves of Drach,which was very commercial i thought,thanks a lot.

If you love PP and surrounding areas i dont think you ll enjoy Santa Ponsa. I have not visited for a long while but believe it to be quite built up. It is in the same area as Magaluf and Palma Nova. Cala D or is made up of quite a few coves and beaches, there is a marina there that has a selection of shops and retaurant around it. It is a man made resort and lacks the charm of Pollensa / Port Pollensa. The caves at Arta are worth a visit as they are not commercial (or were nt 18 months ago when we last went ) and in a lovely spot.

We used to visit loads of places and Always came back believing pp was best
Porto cristo valdermosa soller. All good for day trips but can't beat pp for somewhere to stay

Other Favourite Places on the Island

When we visit PP, we usually pop over to the Caves at Campanet and have coffee & cake on the terrace. The caves are well worth a visit, but the view from the little restaurant is absolutely stunning. It only takes about 20 mins to get there.

We too visit the caves at Campanet, we prefer them too the other ones as they are less commercialised, the views across the fields are great as well, are the cats still there, when we last went they had some adorable kittens there which the kids wanted to take home, as usual!
Agree with all the suggestions, also Costa De los pines and the resorts on the east coast are worth a visit, but always good to get back to PP.

We always call into Porto Petro on our last day (if the flight is in the evening) and it's started to become a tradition to eat lunch there before driving to the airport. Porto Petro is a very pretty little fishing village with some nice restaurants overlooking the harbour.

Last year we also drove to Cala Figuera which is supposed to be gorgeous. We parked above the village though and just couldn't face the steep climb down and then back up again in 100 degree heat! We're leaving that for another time!

Excursions etc

Santa Ponsa? Depends what your looking for, if you love PP i doubt if you'd like SP all that much. I spent a week there last Sept prior to a week in PP, some nice hotels but overall a bit brash, not nearly as nice. The centre is a bit "lively" if you know what i mean, but in a fun way, as opposed to the other resorts in the area. If you like staying up half the night then it's a fun place.

Have stayed in Santa Ponsa pre children and would not return now as it is not nearly as nice as PP, no pinewalk to stroll along. We have stayed in Cala D'or and thought it was expensive and once again no sea front to walk along as it is small coves. Sa Coma was very German when we stayed there. I would stay in Port de Soller if PP or CSV were unavailable, especially now the tunnel has made it easier to get to.

Ever been to Porto Colom?

Really delightful.
Small harbour, good restaurants. Still not too touristy.
One of the best kept secrets of Mallorca.

I thought Cala D'Or was cheap and cheerful and a bit more lively than PP (if that is your thing) - sounds a bit similar to Santa Ponsa as Smiddy describes it. A child friendly place though and certainly no Magalluf!! It has a few nice restaurants and the marina is quite pretty - as are the little cove beaches. We liked Playa Esmarelda - pretty quiet (exept Ali coconuts man! ) - and you can take a boat around them all - that was good. All in all not that bad at all if you want some sun and fun. Our accommodation wasn't great but it was a cheapy. I think the whole week for 2 including flights and transfers was under £300!

We went in September and I would maybe consider going again at that time - probably to a villa (there are some crackers right on the seafront) but I really do prefer PP. I'm not looking for tribute bands and English pubs (although the guitarist from level 42 played our aparthotel one night and he was fab - how the mighty have fallen eh?)

My Sis liked Cala Bona - she thought not disimmilar to PP with a pretty harbour etc.

Is it cala Cor or santa Ponsa with the english pubs and tribute bands or both?,just those few words are enough to put me off,thanks, very useful,will look up the other recommended places for accomodation,you have all been most helpful,will keep you informed.

Just remebered something about Santa Ponsa - the part we stayed in was full of Irish bars, when you walked to the other side of the resort it was very Scandinavian in the type of entertainment on offer and not much English was spoken.

I was describing Cala D'Or sorry for confusion.

There were a few English Bars but it's not a big place and not quite Alcudia Strip and yes there were tribute bands advertised at some of the hotels. One night we thought - "ah well lets have a laugh" We went to see Robbie but sadly he was on a tea break or something. So we thought we'd see "Grease" - stayed for 10 mins of red coat type children's entertainers miming badly - then left. So we went to the loudest English Bar we could find. Truly awful for 5 mins - the music was blaringly loud - then they told us they had to close as it was midnight but if we came inside we could have a free drink - gave up and went home.

I think the problem with Cala D'Or is that it tries to cater to everyone's taste and just sort of misses the mark a little. It can't compete with PP IMO - but few places can.

Other favourite places on the Island

Just going back to Campenet, the kittens are now cats....the owner of the restaurant has had all the current pussy cats neutered so there shouldn't be any more kittens. Also Porto Cristo is a really lovely place and well worth a visit.

last summer a group of girl friends and I went to santa ponsa for our first holiday without parents. there were 7 of us in total. Have been to puerto pollensa a total of 20 times in 18 years ( I am 18 years old). whilst we really enjoyed it, it was a great resort for what we were after, i still needed my two weeks in pollensa i had last year too. Beaing a poor student i am going to sis pins in august with my parents this year and i cant wait. whilst i enjoy going away with my friends, i always feel i need a holiday in pollensa every year

We also like Soller but we like to go there on the victorian train from Palma. Great character and stunning views. Coffee in the square of the old town, then catch the tram down into the port. Lunch in the port and then a spell on the beach and then head back again. Don't miss the last train back though!

Ikea's worth a visit too! LOL
