Owning a car, and working in Mallorca

Can anyone answer these questions for me.

1. To work in Mallorca, what documentation is required? I am a British national by birth.

2. Other than insurance, what else is needed to own and use a car on the island. Do they have an MOT type of system, and how does it work?

There is a very Good book called Living and working in Spain A survival Handbook by David Hampshire www.survivalbooks.net Because it all depends whether you are going to be self employed or working for a company here, also it advises you on the things to do in the UK before you arrive and the various forms - it is now a lot easier that Spain is in the EU and no work permit is required.

If you are buying a new Car the garage will do all the documentation for you, If buying a second hand car it is better to use a Gestoria (like a solicitors Clerk).

MOT I think is first due when the car is 4yrs old then every 2 years, The MOT centre is in Inca.

Although this thread is a few years old (!) - can anyone please advise me - are the rules still the same re. owning a car in Mallorca and keeping its MOT up to date? What about Road Tax? I assume this will need to be done every year? When? Where? How?

All i know is that you have to take the car to Inca for the MOT and you have to make an appointment but i am sure other residents will be able to give you more info .

easiest way is to book it in with Mark Owen at his garage he will book the MOT and take it for you and deal with everything . well worth it, Re road tax this comes out of your bank every year in October same as all the other tax here. When the paper work is done and the car is registered to you you simply give bank details and its taken automatically. Its far less than the UK road Tax .

The MOT is called IVA and is needed when a vehicle is 4 years old and then every 2 years until it is 10 years old and annually thereafter.

The nearest test centre is in Inca on the main road through from PP to Palma, just before the Renault garage. The test costs about €50 and once it is passed you get a sticker which must be fixed to the window screen as it shows the expiry date.

We always take the car ourselves as it a bit of an experience. No one speaks English but the staff are very helpful.
