This is a great thread ...just love hearing everyone's stories...some of the memories go back a long, long time....wished I had discovered it before I did(very much a newbie compared to some) but, better late than never!! Thank goodness I did!

Ooooh!!! GG as a big Agatha Christie fan you have me imagining Miss Marple sluething along the Pinewalk and dining in places like Cellar la Parra or Los Pescadors. This really is a great thread isn't it?.

I know exactly what you mean about 'the smell' - it is still the same as we landed for the first time in Palma in about 1970 (when the terminal was a thatched hut - or similar) and the first thing we noticed was the smell - sort of heat mixed with pine trees. And its still the same - and I always get giddy!! (but back down to earth once inside the terminal and interminable queues!! - especially last May)

Our first trip was to an apartment a friend of ours owned which they sold, therefore we went to stay at Playa Mar then Duva etc. until a few years ago we found a fantastic private villa with own pool & grounds that we now stay in every year. Don't know what it is about the place but as soon as we land it just feels like home from home. We have so many fantastic memories with our kids there & hope to have many more. Only about another six weeks until we are back, this time for 22 days, can't wait.

Puerto Pollensa is such a special place.
We visited for the first time in Sept 2004 and were hooked, so we travel once , sometimes twice a year --usually Mar / APR and a few days end of Oct. We travel else where in July, but this year we were in Florida at Easter so we are going to give the Port a try this July .We just couldn`t go without our PP fix , so here`s to the 6th of July,can`t wait.
We have been in all sorts of places over the last 21 years and I only wish we had discovered PP alot sooner, in our opinion there is knowhere quite like it

I first went to Puerto Pollensa in 1972 having ended up there by default. We had booked our first ever 3 week holiday in Mallorca with OSL and were in an excellent apartment in Cala Mayor but unfortunatley it was above the generator room for the building and the vibration was such that the whole place shuddered constantly and glasses would be vibrated off the table! The company agreed and moved us to a house in Paguera which was dark and damp. We complained and were told this was normal for Mallorca but they eventually agreed to move us and we were sent to a Singala Villa near the Illa D'Or with a strong warning that under no circumstances would they move us again! The villa was fine but the bath water(no shower) trickled out so slowly we would turn it on in the morning and top it up with kettles later in the day on return from the beach. On day one we did consider doing battle and asking to be moved again but once we saw PP we knew it was worth putting up with any discomfort to stay there. In 1977 we returned with our baby who was 7 months old and stayed in the Capri. We had a baby bouncer(do people remember them?) which we used to hang from a pine tree outside Katy's bar so baby could bounce away happily in the shade. On the day we left Katy presented us with a beautifully wrapped box for the baby who had been made a great fuss of throughout the holiday. The box contained a gorgeous embroidered dress - we didn't have the heart to tell Katy that our beautiful baby was in fact a boy!! In 1995, my now partner and I came to Puerto Pollensa and have been every year since, usually for 3 weeks in September. We do go other holidays throughout the year but PP is always THE holiday for all the reasons that others have described so well.

No Eleanor, we simply profusely admired it ( which wasn't difficult because it was beautiful) and said we would keep it for a special occasion. On our return home a cousin benefited and looked lovely in it!!

So kind of them wasn't it? Your little boy must have been a pretty baby.
Pleased the dress was able to be used.
How lucky you were to be moved from Paguera to Pollensa. Paguera is nice but not a patch on Pollensa in my opinion.

What a great thread. I am enjoying reading all of the stories and especially the bits about PP in the past.
Compared to most of you I am a complete novice as I have only been to PP 3 times - in 2005, 2006 and just last month this year, with each trip being in the spring/summer half term week. I fell in love with PP in 2005 and just had to return in 2006. Unfortunately a divorce and lack of money prevented me from returning in 2007-2009 but I finally managed it this year. And hopefully my son and I will be back in 2011!
Although I didn't get to go to PP in 2007, 2008 or 2009 I did still have 3 fantastic August holidays with my son in, you've guessed it, Cornwall! As I had little money thanks to the divorce we went camping near Padstow and were frequent visitors to Watergate Bay. And I agree with the others who say that Cornwall is a close second to PP. The beaches are great, the food is as well just the shame about the weather (in two out of our three Cornwall holidays it rained more often than not!).

I agree, reading about PP in the past is really interesting. I really wouldn't have got the impression it was that glam, so I'm enlightened.
With Cornwall, we go out of season and therefore avoiding the crowds. Knowing you can't book the weather makes it a bonus if you happen to get it. I remember having to try and find a pair of shorts to wear one year at the end of march! But, there's nothing I enjoy more than walking for miles along Watergate bay with the dog, when it's wild and there's next to noone about apart from the surfers. Then it's into the beach hut for an extreme hot chocolate
I'm really surprised and not surprised at all, all at the same time, with what seems to be a mutual love of two particular areas of the world. They're both pretty special in my book.
