Quiet due to recession?

Quiet Recession

Think the shop on the front your friends are referring to is the Spar one, not quite "kiss me quick" but a bit brash all the same. Not that i'd care to shop in them, a bit of organisation and you can easily avoid these shops, they are nothing more than a rip-off.
 
Thats a bit harsh Smiddy, you are obviously better organised than we are, even doing big shops at the supermarkets we always seem to run out of something, they may be dearer but are open well after the others have closed and all day Sunday as well.
 
Yep i noticed a few new shops but variety is the spice of life isn't it? Take the big Chinese-run haberdashery - I am sure it has been welcomed since the nice one in the square became Nicos.

Some of the new places won't last - we know that. And it won't just be the cheap shops. For example there is a new bagette place at the back of the Corb Mari on the Formentor Road but I reckon it won't last. The bagettes were very nice but at neear 9 euros for two we didn't return... the exchange rate will be their undoing.

I just think that PP has charm. Had we wanted Magaluf ( can't even spell the place) then thats where we would have gone. I don't want to see PP change for the worse - recession or no resession, there is place for everything and in my opinion PP needs to keep its class. No - I'm not a snob - God - we live in Southend on Sea and have had much to put up with but our council have continued to do a wonderful job in stopping a decline. The same should happen in PP - in my opinion! Just because times are tough does not mean we have to let standards drop infact it is an excellent opportunity to encourage a higher standard all round. Sorry if I have upset anyone. It wasn't intended. It is just that when we first came to PP over 25 years ago we loved the place and we just don't want to see it go down hill!
 
My sentiments entirely - PP has always been regarded as a little upmarket. Liking the finer things in life IMO extends to your surrounding and overall experience including the quality of your shopping.

Excellent views! This should also extend to restaurants, a problem which we have all seen as restuarants downsize or change. Its a vicious cycle though and a difficult time to keep going when finance is uppermost in everyones mind and pocket. A case of "half a loaf is better than none" for retailers encourages them to attempt to draw in quantity rather than quality. Hopefully the bargain shops will not take over completely but give a balance. Change happens far quicker now than 25 years ago doesnt it eleanor? Been there, read the book but refused to buy the T-shirt! ;)
 
So pleased you agree with me. To be honest I was a little worried that my comments were a little over the top and I was expected to be bashed!

Ha! Dont worry about that, anyone who has an opinion is open to criticism from others! Dont be afraid to voice your own opinions as there will always be someone else who thinks the same way to back you up!

For what its worth Eleanor, if that is being a snob, I am one! I agree with what you say, its exactly the reason I take my family to PP every year.

We seem to have gone off topic a bit, we were discussing how quiet/ not quiet the port is, I think the overwhelming majority of people support this view, but it may take a while for everyone to post their replies, it may be more interesting if people disagree and say why they think the port should change, maybe in another thread?
 
Please can we keep this topic on whether PP is currently quiet due to the recession which I know it is based on both reports from visitors but also from our own experience of selling/renewing advertising for the site. It is VERY difficult this year and we are finding it hard too.

Both this & the Bony's thread are starting to sound very similar &, dare I say it, like a scratched record that we've heard several times over the last few years.

So come on guys, if you're out there at the moment & have any actual news on how this is panning out for your favourite resort, do post here.

And if you want to help encourage more visitors, do post your recommendations in the rest of the forum. Thanks. :)
 
I was talking to someone who works at Sis Pins , they are full and the restaurant busy every night. I do think things have picked up this week. The sail and surf school have been very busy and not only with german clients. I guess until the end of the season no one will know for sure. But as someone else said to me the other day we have just got to make the best of it and work through it.

Its great we all have the one thing in common and that is Puerto Polensa.
The most beautiful part of the island.As I said in my opening post "I love the place".
So lift your glasses and drink to PP and great times ahead.
God let me win the lotto.
 
Having just come back I can vouch the port is a busy as usual and the town seems even busier this year. The beach was nearly full most days without many spare beds in the beach bar area. Yes the restaurants seemed quieter Mondays and Tuesdays, but I suppose people stayed in more times and went out at the end of the week and week end. The town was busy even after the La Patrona when it normally is quite, with the square full most nights and booking essential in the restaurants.
 
Yes I agree, Sws. I thought it was as busy as usual in the evenings, maybe a little quieter on the beach during our 1st week (18-25 July) but restaurants were full, booking essential in popular places.
