Recommendations for Mallorcan Specialities

Thanks for the reply CathB, this is our third year in a row in PP and we have had some not so good meals the last couple of years, we have resolved ourselves to that fact that we are taking restaurants on face value, ie tose that look 'posh' do not always serve up the best food. My husband and I are big fish lovers and like to try the mallorcan specialites, so does our 7 year old son!! so would welcome any recommendations for good eateries!! O'Lume and El Posito seem to be a must for us this year, although I think we will have to make the pennies stretch a little further with the Euro down

For a great budget restaurant and the best paella in PP (and a restaurant full of Spanish locals every late evening) Brisa Marina is hard to beat for value. It's near the marina on the front past the dreaded Bar Imperial.

Thanx, thats definitely on our list to visit, why do you call it the 'dreaded' Bar Imperial - don't think we have been in there either?

Why "dreaded"? Well, it's "each to his own" I guess, but Bar Imperial is exclusively "British" with live singers of (forgive me...I'm trying to be objective) questionable "club singer" ability played at a volume that, to me, is intrusive and out of character with the resort as a whole. Why go abroad for this?

I fully understand that others will completely disagree with me, and will enjoy the Bar Imperial experience. If you do, just don't expect me to buy you a drink there......I'll have walked past and be enjoying a nice meal in Brisa Marina!

Disorderly, Bar Imperial is owned by a Spaniard called Rafael.

Maybe Bar Imperial is one to avoid then. Each to their own, but why do people go abroad and look for something british??? and then moan that the fish and chips don't taste like they do at home, simple answer stay at home then.

Hi Sparky. Raphael is a clever Spaniard then because he's hit upon great niche market - the place is always jam packed in an evening, so fair play to him. There wouldn't be room for me....phew!

Have to say it's not a place i go to often. It is very claustrophobic inside. Rafa had a very serious heart attack a few years ago so he doesn't work too many hours now, i think 2 other guys run it for him and he just does a few hours. If i do go in, it is early evening for a pre- dinner V+T, but Rafa is a really friendly, kind man. Agree with you about when there is entertainment on, it gets too packed and loud..

For traditional and very reasonable prices, you must go to bodega ferrara. (Can't remember the correct spelling,) but take the turning with the tabac on the corner -funnily enough not far from the bar imperial, and its just down there on the left ( and they also have the premises on the right too). Fantastic mallorcan food, the hake (meluza) is delicious. There's no frills but I have been going there for years time and time again as do most people that have tried it. The paella is fab too.
Can't wait, I'm out there in less than 2 weeks and this will be on my def meals out. My 11 yr old daughter loves the food there, so I'm sure your son will.

Thankyou very much, we will make sure we find that one, may give your recommendation a try or the paella, only had one paella in PP and that was in the old Tangos and was a little disapointed with it. It was a night with a torrential downpour and we had to move as the roof almost came in over our table with the rain!! 30 days to go !!!
