Smoking ban

AH - but it was a no smoking BAR! That of course, is just daft and taking it to extremes. Bars are expected to have smokers in, and would be tolerated as such. Indeed I would expect most bar clients to be smokers and non smokers would be in the minority.

I admire reformed ex-smokers enormously, as although I have never been a smoker, I do understand how addictive it is even if you realise it would be sensible to stop. And good on anyone who has chosen to stop and managed to do so! I also appreciate those who choose to carry on smoking but have the consideration not to smoke in the company of non smokers.

I don't think anyone is going to change their opinions, it should just be common sense that no one inflicts anything antisocial on anyone else, anywhere, surely! Or am I wrong on that?

Absolutely correct Bella, well said.

As I said in my first post - it is the power of choice and all views should be valued. I decided not to smoke and it was difficult but 20 years on I haven't touched a ciggie. Having said that I would never attempt to preach that my view is the right one and all must follow!
Everyone has the power of choice as I said before - thankfully we can do without a nanny state!

I choose not to visit areas where smoking is heavy. I said again in my previous post - for personal reasons but importantly my health reasons.

Sparky I tried to tread carefully with this one and stated that it would bring many comments and perhaps best debated in the Tapas Bar. Please do read my posts again and you will see that I was referring to my behaviour as an ex smoker and not disrespecting anyones views!

I haven't a holier than thou attitude!! I actually said there were two sides to this as a debate and each view should be valued! I also said I didn't care where anyone smoked as long as it didn't effect me! That is being tolerant and certainly is respecting their views. I would therefore question -are mine being respected as a non smoker - obviously not, for your post to be directed at me.

I admitted as a past smoker, of not taking peoples views into account and lighting up between courses - I stated that I now felt that was wrong and anti social - my view!
I also said in my earlier post that it is important to have the power of choice.

I do respect others rights and I value their views - perhaps others can also value mine!

Hi Eleanor,
If you read my post again you will realise that i said "many although not all" had a holier than thou attitude, at no point did i say you did nor did i say you did not respect others views, i merely said it's a shame we can't all respect other views. I was in fact agreeing with you and actually applaud those who manage to give up .
With respect puffing on a ciggie in the privacy of my home ;).

Well said Cocoa. We were there a week ago and no problems, just like you say. The restauarants with frontage i.e. places like C'an Josep and Brisa Marina we could just sit by or outside the doors puffing away.

Our first night at Brisa Marina a Spanish lady woman in a massive family was sitting there in the restaurant with a small dog on her lap. All puffing away, too. Never in England. I can't really see the Spanish adhering to a law should it be introduced, or if it is, they will avoid the places where it is more likely to be enforced (as indeed will I). May kill some entirely.

Spanish are big smokers, but small dogs also:eek:

No one would have believed the French would have said "Oui" and the Italians, "Si" to the smoking ban, and as the Spanish are as proud, and law abiding as the rest of us I am sure they will say also say "Si" when the time comes.

Adios

Dave

I could be wrong, Eleanor, but I think as it stands in Spain... they have already got designated areas for NON SMOKERS...not the other way round as u suggested. Since it is the non smokers that have the concerns and objections and air contaminated, then I think that is the reasonable path to take unlike the UK.
just curious... but why should this thread be taken to the Tapas Bar ?

Miriam

Well - as said in my earlier post - this subject would bring many comments and views and it has. Interestingly it seems, more from those who prefer to smoke! We wait to see what happens in the future.

The reason I said it may have been a subject for the tapas bar was that the thread at that time was going off course and was getting into a smoking debate as opposed to a thread about smoking in PP. It was a suggestion as often when threads go off course that is the outcome - nothing more!

We can all argue all we like, but the bottom line is the various governments are bringing in these laws based on health of workers grounds, and that's what they are, laws, not polite requests! The Spanish government are no different from any other government, if they pass laws, then as a civilised society they are duty bound to enforce them. I do not believe a ban would affect trade at all, there's always 2 sides to a coin, for every smoker who vows to stay away there's actualy (more) non-smokers who will take their place. People seem to forget non-smokers stay away because of the smoke nuicance.

I have to disagree Smiddy, i can only speak for Plymouth but the fact is the the pubs became deserted because the non smokers did not start using them and the smokers stayed home especially in bad weather. Pubs and social clubs are now closing down at an alarming rate. I cannot see the situation being any different here in PP or anywhere in Spain, it is bound to affect trade maybe not as badly because the climate here is better and it's not a hardship to go outside but believe me it will have an effect.

As with all "progress" there will always be casualties along the way. Hopefully the upsides outweigh the downsides. Clever, forward thinking restaurants will find a way around problems and be able to segregate if necessary. After all, we didn't all stop flying when the smoking ban came into operation on planes now did we?!;)

Am I missing something here, when the smoking ban comes into force what will there be to segregate :confused:

There will be no segregation, other than that which allows smoking on terraces. Exceptions will be for hotels which can allocate a percentage of smoking rooms and possibly for the establishment of "smoking clubs". The ban will be enforced if only because the town halls will whiff the smell of potential fines and therefore revenue. There will be bars who will fancy they can flout the ban, but they're likely to be denounced not by the public but by other bars.

I take your point Sparky, but some bar/restaurants in the UK which have eating facilities have actually shown a increase in business since the smoking ban. There are many reasons for pubs failing these days, i've yet to meet a smoker/drinker who gave up pubs because of the ban. I think one of the main reasons ( in the UK anyway) is the Tesco's of this world selling beer cheaper than water, cheaper than 30 years ago. The overflowing bottle banks in PP also tell there own story!
