Speed Cameras and General Road Safety laws.

Really!!?? Now who would have thought that! I'm sure it is obvious to absolutely everyone that the age old saying of Speed Kills will be true for ever and a day. The "win win" observation that I said, slightly tongue in cheek but obviously picked on, was about enforcing speed limits, surely that was clear enough - but maybe not. We still have the same problems in the UK with speeding and the dreadful results of it, speed cameras or not, so its drivers knowledge and training that is needed more. At least with the cameras they do actually slow down motorists for some of the time, so perhaps we need more and more and more of the things! Either that or physically speed limit every single vehicle on the road!

Oh Tony! And there was I hoping to wave at you whilst on my mobile and eating a sandwhich at the same time! LOL! Joking of course!;)
Totally agree with what you have said obviously, as I am sure everyone else is.
I think my point of view is that it is far too easy to inadvertantly go over the speed limit when there is a clear, wide road - usually out of season. I am actually in favour of knowing where speed cameras are because it DOES make you aware of your speed and you DO slow down. So it's a win win situation for all concerned to know there are cameras around - except the police who may not get quite so much money in their coffers!

I agree with you here Bella. It is so easy to not realise that your speed is creeping up and to be aware of speed camaras and their locations keeps you mind on the matter. Laughing aside too, it is amazing the sights you do see such as a women applying lipstick and recently I was followed by a car with a driver with a dog on his lap! I couldn't take my eyes from my mirror as it was a very strange experience as the dog was quite large. The Man's head was peeping from the side of the dog!

Tony I'm sorry you are unable to drive and I do hope your seizure was a one off. I believe you are able to re-apply if you are seizure free for 2 years. Public transport in PP is very good and we have at times opted for the Hoppa and then used the local bus service which met husband's needs but not mine! - No bus to Ikea!!

I do think in Mallorca the speed some of the coaches seem to travel needs to be addressed. They also seem to be able to access any lane on the road too often taking many chances in my view. And as for Motorcycles - well, what can be said! A motto on an excellent website is 'keep life safe' what a shame that we even have to think of speed cameras but we do. Yes education is important but it is attitude that needs to be addressed to. Where did that term 'boy racer' ( now of course girl racer too!) come from? The roads are full of the bright sparks overtaking on corners and pushing along the cars infront by their aggresive driving attitude.

Husband has just reminded me that I was hooted driving from Palma to Pollensa on our last visit as I was driving too slow even though I was driving just within the speed limit.

I still think the signs that light up with your speed are much more effective and make you realise what speed you going so you slow down and tend to stay slowed down.

If I remember rightly, there was one of those as you entered PP about 3 years ago. It didnt last long for some reason!

This is a true story!!!

Hubby went on a speed awareness course a couple of years back after getting a ticket for doing 34 mph in a 30 zone...the price we pay for living in the sticks where the limit is generally the maximum speed then suddenly drops down to 30 through the villages. Off he went to Milton Keynes for the course and waited apprensively in the room with about ten others. The guy in charge said there was one more person still to arrive so they all sat and waited patiently. After about 5 minutes the guy was about to give up and start without the absentee ...when suddenly a car screeched in to the car park! A young woman jumped out of her car, legged it up the stairs, burst through the door and looking very hot and flustered said 'Sorry I'm late I had to drive like a maniac to get here' Amidst a lot of stifled laughter, the course presenter gave her a withering look and said ' I don't think you should be telling me that!!!!!

On a more serious note, I agree with snowy that the lit up signs that tell you what speed you're doing and show either a smiley or sad face are a much better deterrent, and make you much more aware of your speed.

Pam got stopped for speeding ask why she told the officer " I am nearly out of petrol so was rushing to the garage before I ran out"

Well PP have tried the smiley face camera; speed bumps; one way road; suggested pedestrianisation and by pass! :o

Regarding the speed traps, some sat navs are fitted with detectors, are two types of detectors, one for fixed radar and one for mobile radar i.e hand held, it is illegal in Spain to have one of these detectors fitted and I believe that it is the type that detects the hand held radar that is illegal but this should be checked out as I am not sure which way round it is.

What happened to the over lane traffic lights on the entrance to PP (near where Tango is now)?

They used to change to red as you approached. If you were speeding you had to stop, but if you were doing a sensible speed under the limit it would change to green before you got there!

There were others across the island the same.

I remember the one on the entry to Inca before the new road was opened, it worked exactly the same. Mind you I think the locals pipped you if you actually stopped!

This seemed a simple solution to speeding.

Can anyone update us on where the speed cameras are?

Although I have not spotted them, I understand that they are located:

1 - Crestacx Church between the motorway and Pollenca
2 - Motorway between 15 and 16km markers going to Pollenca
3 - Motorway just before Marrataxi junction towards Palma

There must be others?

Could the more knowledgeable confirm these and inform us of others they know about?

I am not usually a speeder, but as others have mentioned sometimes speed drifts up when you are keeping up with traffic/coaches etc!!;)

Spotted another fixed speed camera yesterday. Its on the Ma13A as you travel from the end of the motorway towards Alcudia, about 400m before the left turn to Pollenca Town.
