Speed Cameras and General Road Safety laws.

Don't forget that the speed reduces as you go under the bridge just beyond the Pollenca turn. The police are often around that area and will fine on the spot. It changes down to 100km.
 
Just come across this map of proposed Speed Camera locations. Its a bit out of date but this is the sort of info we need.
 
Good find GL! Perhaps we can update it ourselves as we go along. Turn it into a grid reference map and be like the good old USA road truckers - "Ten Four liddle lady, new camera spotted bridge 4a"!!!!:cool:

I've just copied the map into word, enlarged it and printed it out so I can update it when I'm visiting in April/May.

Any other contributors with accurate Locations ie Road Name, Km Marker to nearest tenth and Heading Towards would be great.

As I appear to have been jumped on for daring to warn others about speed camera locations I would just like to point out that I am sure most of us have no problem with speed cameras when they are used to genuinely reduce speed at proven or potential accident black spots. Hopefully this will remain the case on this island and not go the way of the UK where not only have speed cameras purposely been used on perfectly safe pieces of road through open Countryside purely to raise revenue, but in some cases the limits have also been reduced to a snails pace in order to raise even more!

I think the majority of people are extremely grateful for your warnings Deanscroft. As with anything you will always find the odd person ready to have a go but please do not be put off. I too agree with your comments. You know by the number of positive posts that the information is much appreciated so please do keep posting and thank you.
 
I don't think anyone has been "jumped on" or "had a go at", it's just some people have voiced their opinion and said that if you don't exceed the speed limit you won't need to worry about where the speed cams are.
I think we are all agreed that road safety is very important and i had that brought home to me earlier today when i had news that Jack Hardley of the recently opened Hardley's Diner is in Inca hospital following a road traffic accident early this morning.
 
I dont think people are having a go, they are just voicing their opinions on the dangers of excess speed as they are entitled to.
Thats terrible news about Jack hardley, is it serous?
Anyone who reads the on-line DB from the link here will know that it seems every other day there is a serious fatal accident some where on the island, clearly they must do something to stop these.
 
I have noticed when driving myself on the island that it is easy to be 'pushed along' by others on the road. Many a time I have had someone so close to my boot that they could probably see what was on the back seat! I have also noticed just how often chances are taken by some when overtaking, Sometimes with very little space available for error. Coaches seem to often exceed the speed limits too. I assume that these people are people who think they know the road 'well enough' to risk not only their lives but those of others. It is very easy to feel intimidated on the roads in Mallorca. I also have noticed that to give way and allow someone entry to the roads is rare especially the motorways whereby it seems at times to be a mission of some to speed up and actively make driving difficult.

When I drive in Mallorca I am on holiday. I don't have any appointments, I am not rushing to work, I don't need be watch the clock, there is no hurry. I relax.

SWS, Jack's injuries are not life threatening but i don't think he will be able to work for a while, in the 29 years since i first visited PP he is one of many people i know who have been involved in road traffic accidents here and two of those died. It was heartbreaking to witness the devastation of their families.
 
This is sad Sparky. The motto on the road should be 'keep life safe'. I do think the majority of people are aware that a vehicle is a dangerous machine. Its just the minority that seem to think they have the right to the road! Personally I think speed cameras are good in as much as it does make the driver aware and to be more in control of their speed. I think to have knowledge of where the cameras are situated is to reinforce the awareness of speed. It is so easy to allow the speed creep up without realising especially on the motorway.
I hope your friend makes a full recovery quickly and is able to go forward with his life Sparky.
 
Exactly what we have said before eleanor, and thanks for repeating it. Anything that makes for more awareness is invaluable. I remember seeing posters at blackspots saying (so many) killed on this road last year/month. I am sure that also made people think. They need to constantly bring in new methods for awareness though, as familiarity causes lack of awareness yet again.

Also have another friend who knows Jack, and we too send our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
 
I had a quick chat with his dad this morning and he says Jack is out of hospital, he has a couple of broken bones, bruises, stitches and is obviously very sore. He was lucky, it could have been a lot worse.

Too true Bella. Actually when in Rhodes early last year we were very affected by the number of memorials we saw along the roads. Small glass shrines with photographs and flowers and even lighted candles. Made you go cold! So sad and many so young. Yes it effected us but I have to say it didn't seem to have any effect on others who still used the tiny roads as race tracks. I think you are right Bella - to see something every day is to not see it! Therefore what is the answer?? I suppose it is the pocket and parting with hard earned pounds or euros? What is it about speed cameras which has the effect of making people slow down and be concerned? It has to be the fine or the points but no good if people slow for them then exercise their right foot having passed them by!

I agree but I think we all need to be aware of driving rules in Spain for our own safety.

Just come across this site:

Reforma Ley de Trafico which unfortunately has no English option but transated by the browser has some interesting info.:confused:

The last violation (Serious) mentions instruments that detect Radar...6000 Euro fine and 6 points!! :eek:

"Drive mechanisms or instruments inhibition traffic surveillance or radar detection systems"

Can someone else with some Spanish language skills see if this applies to us!!
 
Gordon i would imagine this and all laws will apply to everyone no matter what nationality you are.
I was told last week that it is now no longer a legal requirement to keep a full set of bulbs in your vehicle.

Just found some additional info here

The 6000 euro fine is for using radar disuption equipment to avoid detection.

You may use GPS but not program it on the move. getting stopped for this is deemed a serious offence which will involve a 200 euro fine?

It would be good to get a better translation of the offences and fines.

I cycle when in PP so I would like to know the regs regarding bikes.

For intance, regs about lighting, flourescent jackets, helmets etc

Can anyone help out here, maybe start a new Thread

If cycling at night reflective clothing must be worn and you must have front and rear lighting, failure to have this can lead to a 100€ fine.
