On our recent visit to PP I enjoyed the pleasures of the house Vino tinto in most of the places we ate at. can I say that not once did we get a wine we couldn't slurp:lol
Has enybody got a recomondation for a place for the best house wine?
Do I hear the stampede of wine snobs locking their wine cellars? or is it the plastic Indians on the warpath again?

I think its the measure of an eating house to provide a good house wine
We often try the house and agree its normally very good
We also try other wines from Spain and of course the Mallorcan wines
After a good meal and plenty of the house stuff who cares at the end of the evening LOL

Couldn't agree more Robjay. Just got back from a quick weekend. One of our 'cheaper' meals was at La Piazza in the square. Not sure what everyone elses views are on this place but we've always found it busy, even in February - always a good sign. Their house tinto was a pretty good Rioja.

Not being much of a wine buff, but an avid drinker, I always go for the house wine and never had a bad bottle yet, except once in Menorca where it was corked. The house white at Los Zarzarles is lovely... must get back there.

.....just wondering, if Spain is like the uk. Read an article recently bout house wine.( usually, thats what we go with ) Apparently...it is NOT the one to choose. In most restaurant in the UK, it was least value for money and quality. I always thought that it sorta went with the reputation of the restaurant to have a half decent house...any thoughts ?

Must admit I dont think I would ever be tempted to order the House wine in England - unless you were absolutely certain of what you were getting- I do know that the practice of mixing left over wines and putting it as house wine is not an urban myth! But I have never, ever had a house wine in Mallorca or mainland Spain that was suspect in any way. No doubt I have just shot myself in the foot now!!:\

I have resisted the urge to contribute to this thread as generally I don't order the house wine in a restaurant as I find there are other wines on the list that, despite being a few pounds or euros more, actually offer better value.

I do know of one restaurant who stocks cheaper wine for the house choice, but I do think it depends on the place you are eating.

I have known restaurants where the house wine is £20 or more and for that, they certainly couldn't get away with cheap and nasty!

I think, as a general rule, the more expensive the establishment, the more chance you have of getting a good house wine, as in all things. It's what you pay for.

And that's a personal gripe of mine so I'll let rip now... I doubt many of the members on here would scour the supermarket for the cheapest cuts of meat or motley vegetables just to save a few pence?

So why use that philosophy when it comes to wine????

You do get what you pay for if you go for the house wine but the more expensive restaurants couldn't get away with serving 'plonk'. You will find that the house wine in the better establishments is not much cheaper than some others on the list, but I agree with Jane ,if you're going for the whole dining experience why scrimp on the wine for the sake of a few euros.

Having said that the house red in ..yes you've guessed!..Los Zarzales is very good, and sometimes when you've got 3 grown up 'kids' with you (and they can knock the old vino back) it has to be done!

Its not actually a 'saving a few euros' thing...usually there is a big crowd of us, and it saves an hours debate on who wants what, what colour, fizzy or not etc ! lol. We usually eat in fairly good restaurants, so I had thought that the House wine, would be ones selected by the owners as good all rounders, for quality and value but apparently this is not often the case in the UK. Nice to know its a better setup in Spain

As the king of cheapo plonko, even if the tex mex was giving house wine away by the barrel full I wouldn't step foot in the place :x
Jane as far as cheap cut goes it's not for me. But you know me I'll dip my hand in the bargin bin at the wine aisle anyday as long as it's red
As someone who often finds himself in some of the best kitchens in the south east of scotland/Edinburgh area I have no doubts as to where the wine comes from for their sauces. Next time empty that bottle

Browsing and just came across your post.
La P is one of the best value for money places i have eaten in.

Believe me, there have been a few.

It caters for all at reasonable prices, freindly and family orientated, they serve children but i coudn't manage a whole one.

Jane , I might have mentioned before that I am a retired partner of Waitrose and will always sing their praises as far as wine goes as I think their wine specialists are good, but I happen to like Blossom Hills red wine and waitrose do not stock it and are not likely to . What do you think of it as a wine Jane? Must admit I do like Gran Lopez that they do stock.

Hello Bee,

I have a lot of respect for Waitrose. I completed my Basic and Higher Wine exams with a friend who worked in the wine department in Waitrose and I took my higher level exam in the Waitrose offices. Their wine range is among the best of the supermarket wines.

As for Blossom Hill, it does its job very well - it's fruity and easy-drinking and I wouldn't say no to a glass!

Gran Lopez, I haven't tried that - perhaps you could write a post for us?
