From todays DDM and there are some great old photos here :- Cien años de historias del mar - Diario de Mallorca.

JOAN FRAU. INCA Since time immemorial, the Mediterranean has brought wealth and misery, the entire coast of Mallorca. The Port de Pollença is no exception. Old fishing port now converted into residential and tourist center, 'eu Moll' maintains a small colony of fishing professionals who now celebrate the first century of existence of the Brotherhood of Pescadors, the first of which is on record in the island.
The association of fishermen is now a reflection of what it has meant over the last hundred years, but refuses to abandon an ancient activity that, despite the changes, continues to collect fruits. The centenary allows Pescadors Confraria of reviewing the past with pride sailor, but can not help peeking at the future with some distrust. The overuse of water, the lower value of the work of fishermen and bureaucracy are emerging as the new enemies of the people of the sea.
Pescadors The Brotherhood of the Port of Pollença was born the day of Tots Sants, 1912 to respond to the need pineapple to defend the interests of a sector over this century has fed many families in the municipality. Today only 23 professional fishermen who are members of the guild, with a fleet of thirteen ships and a minor art 'bou's boat'. In the heyday of the brotherhood came to have 55 boats.
"The primary function of the Brotherhood is to process the paperwork affecting the sector, consumed by bureaucracy, if you go out to sea to fish can not take all this paperwork," explains Joan Suau, larger pattern at the headquarters that preserves the brotherhood in the first line of Moll, adorned with dozens of pictures of the old 'seals' that have written the history of the municipality of Nord fishing.
fishermen Each partner works for himself and profits are directly linked Gender collected at sea. All catches are auctioned in Llonja of Palma, sole authorized position Producers Organization Mallorca Sea, of which the brotherhood 'pollencina' part. Gone are the days when the fisherman selling fresh goods directly upon arrival to port after a day of slaughter.
"This activity gives to live, but less and less," said Suau, tired of having to "goad" together with the Government, the central executive and European Union authorities to which they are accountable. The economic crisis in their favor either. "In these times, the high-end fish and lobster, 'Cap Roig' or 'gall', it's cheaper."
However, fishermen know that the capture of these species is essential for the survival of the sector. From April to August, most are devoted to fishing for lobsters. "When the season ends, people tend to branch more: some are dedicated to squid and other fish to other types." From December to April, the 'goby' is the most coveted, but now must wait for orders from Brussels to catch it again this year, after an inspection in February deemed unlawful capture. "Hopefully this will not take long to get ready because if we can not fish 'goby' this year, there will be boats will reconsider their continuity."
The voice of experience
Albertí Ensenyat Mateu, 83, Ensenyat Francisco Perez, 67, and Font Pep Marti, 72, three retired fishermen who have pursued the activity in the Port de Pollença since childhood. They know the sea perfectly, but no longer respected. The three have lived at sea embarrassment from temporary bestial ('pallisses', in its own jargon) to lost companions, disappeared under water Majorcan helplessly for them.
They recall with nostalgia the best years of the brotherhood, when exercising this school even for children. "It was the first official school Pollença, aimed at children from the port and managed by sailors, but also came the children of the military base," said Mateu.
Yes, the office of fisherman madrugones based learning and endless days at sea, 20 or 25 miles offshore "maximum". "We can say that we have lived well, we have not become rich, but if one gives espabila to live, if you picked up was not enough, he had to try other gear," said Francisco Perez.
These veterans are convinced that "previously worked more, fishing has evolved worse, partly because before there were more fish in the sea now," Pep Font participates. In the over-exploitation of marine resources has to do the boom in recreational fishing. The president of the fraternity, Joan Suau, explains that "there are now hundreds of yachts at the Moll, when you were just a few years, and the problem is that fans caught a hundred times more fish than the professionals, the law is not so strict for them. "
Font Pep notes that "politicians are also recreational anglers, and nobody throws stones on the roof", referring to the unwillingness to appreciate the institutions to regulate this activity. The political class is in the crosshairs of these fishermen. "Do not look for us," match. Moreover, the crisis has increased "competition" at sea. "Now there are many people on the dole and fishing is an alternative," they say. Nevertheless, "the sea is something that grabs you for life."

The Pollensa autumn fair.

From todays DDM La muestra artesana se despide del actual formato en una feria otoñal muy animada - Diario de Mallorca

J. FRAU Renew or die. The municipality of Pollença has decided to apply this universal maxim to give new life to his acclaimed craft shows, centerpiece of the fair autumnal Sunday celebrated his big day with the visit of thousands of people. The XXIX Mostra d'Artesania, located in the church and cloister of Sant Domingo, had an air of farewell yesterday, combined with mounting parts and artisans who were exposed cardboard boxes in order to symbolize a move .
The craft show was presented as a chronological visitors explaining the origins, consolidation and the current state, giving to understand that from next year it will debut a new format. As the ruler of fairs, Miquel Llobeta, it is "a point and followed" in the evolution of the craft shows. "Next year, with a new trend will emerge with a more edgy crafts to promote emerging artists from the municipality," he said. Thus, the XXX edition next year leave of "new ideas" to "facilitate the business to the craftsmen and not be limited to pictorial elements," added the mayor 'pollencí'.
Fair is visited
Pending check, next year, shows the evolution of the craft, the town of Pollença yesterday again received thousands of people who did not want to miss the autumn fair. The morning, almost spring, helped the commercial success of the event.
Not only sample artisan live show 'pollencina'. True, the cloister of Sant Domingo is the axis around which revolves the whole sample, but the main streets of the town were filled with exhibitors and stalls selling all kinds of delicacies and handicrafts. Highlighted the striking peasant market located in Plaza Major, where it was possible to see the development of a typical 'panada' Majorcan sausage taste or try on traditional clothing islanders made on the island. An antique car show in the center of the square was very appealing.
Very popular were also exhibitions of cars and motorcycles, as well as the different samples of animals that were installed at the fairgrounds.
Several dance groups performed traditional Mallorcan demonstrations in different parts of the town.

What a shame, does this mean less celebrities for you to spot? :(.

Sand castle sculptor fined .

This from the DDM, Costas sanciona con 2.163 euros al constructor de un castillo de arena en Pollença - Diario de Mallorca , translated by Google.

J. FRAU We know that urban development, especially if it is on the seafront, is heavily guarded by the administration. But what is less known is that a theoretically innocent activity like building a sand castle on the beach can also be subject to punishment, and not exactly cheap, if the inspector on duty decides to implement the Coastal Act to the letter.
And if you do not have it explained to the constructor of a sand castle last summer acting in Albercutx beach in Port de Pollença, caught in the middle of sculptural activity and subsequently punished with a penalty of EUR 2163.64 constructions lift sand without a license should be granted administrative territorial demarcation Costas to occupy part of a public space as is the beach.
's also true that the work executed when the offender was caught by the guards of Costas unresponsive to the image most have a simple sandcastle precisely. And, according to the report by inspectors has resulted later in that financial penalty, the builder had occupied Albercutx no less than 18 square meters of beach sediments lift his sculpture shorebirds.
The Gazette the resolution of the case published on 27 November. The offender decided not to make any claim against the penalty within fifteen days that the Coastal attached, so that the fine is considered firm because it "was sufficiently established the veracity of the facts."
Implementation of the Coastal Act
The Coastal Act does not cite any of his articles on the prohibition of building sandcastles on the beach. However, inspectors surprised the offender under construction applied Article 90th of that legislation, which determines how administrative offense "acts or omissions causing injury or impairment to public land or sea-land use and occupation without due administrative title. "
In this sense, it is interpreted as the result of the sanction is the fact that he used 18 square meters of public space as is the beach for an activity for which no requested specific permission and also had lucrative nature, since the aim of creating large sand castles (not necessarily take the form of castles) is causing the admiration of swimmers or bystanders to get compensation.
The Coastal Regulation, document also serves as a reference for the calculation of the penalty that has been imposed on the offender Pollença, provides in Article 186 that "the imposition of the fine does not preclude the obligation to deliver the entire Administration benefit obtained, "which in the case of sand castle builder in Albercutx sosprendido" amounts to zero euros. " Therefore, it appears that the offender was caught before or shortly after the conclusion of the work arena, and had not yet managed to raise a single euro. Moreover, the record also compels the offender to "restore the land to its former state." Yes, the castle builder has the option of filing an appeal with the general direction of Costas.
Activity in Pollença
Pollença Council admits that last summer had been detected two different groups of people making big sandcastles on different points of the first line of the port. The councilor of Environment, Maria Buades (PP), explains that the bylaws do not prohibit this practice because "competition is for Costas" and adds that, in principle, the City Council has not included this activity in the last request for occupancy beaches processed before the Coastal by the municipal institution.

During discussion of the motion presented to the full Republican Left an amendment (also approved unanimously) to urge the Ministry to ensure the use of the dock.
Alternative Moreover pointed to the need for "the City Council should ask Costas acting against illegal dead Posidonia are damaging the area.
The full City Council debated Pollença Thursday night this and other motions, including one filed by the PSM, Alternative and Esquerra to ask the Consell de Mallorca to remove the obstacles that still occupy the old road of Lluc. This motion was approved with votes in favor of Alternative, PSOE, PSM, Esquerra, Malena Bartomeu Estrany and Fuster (both of Lliga) and with the abstention of the PP, CiU, UMP and Marti Roca (Lliga). From the first moment Marti Roca has shown support for the retraining and has been photographed promoting the new party with some local representatives of convergence, which has not sat well with the two other aldermen asked for more time before deciding if integrated into the Lliga or form an independent party.

Despite the ratings remains local government in a minority of PP and three aldermen of Lliga with convergence in opposition.

Looks like an old fashioned deck chair to me ;).

A town carpenter manufactures these seats using traditional wood and have incorporated fabrics 'llengües' to add more tradition to the product.

AITOR F. VALLESPIR. PORRERES "Originality is back at home," said the architect Antoni Gaudí. A carpentry Porreres has decided to follow that maxim. The brothers Picornell Serra-namesake-business owners have wanted to recapture the magic of a classic piece of furniture between Mallorca: the sun.
The product creator is Rafel Picornell, who has rethought the design with two criteria in mind: respect tradition and innovate in comfort. "We have relied on a beach lounger classic of a lifetime, but we wanted to give you a more modern," says Carpenter.
For example, the wooden structure, as before, but now unions are made with stainless steel screws. The second change is consistent with the current era, where everyone wants to customize their helpful: faceplates, phone covers, adhesives multicolor ... The recliner incorporates two removable rods for furniture fabric that can be substituted in one minute. "It is easier to wash," he adds Picornell.
And the third big thing is the "return to origin." Craftsman Porreres argues that "there is nothing more Mallorcan fabrics llengües, so we decided to manufacture these traditional fabrics", characterized by elongated figures in bright colors.
Filats Thus were born the sun, which is touted as the "sun shutters ". The owner of the view that the Mallorcan carpentry had rejected this element of their daily lives, despite being "the old way off par excellence." "For example, there are many more people who prefer to relax in rocking chairs, and these are already sold with llengües fabrics, so this was the logical evolution of the chairs," he says. This is provided in three factories #one of Santa Maria, Pollença and another third of Lloseta# that give textile designs.
The inspiration came in February this year to see images of the 50s and 60s in the that all the beaches bathers rested on wooden chairs, which are far from those of today #unsightly, uncomfortable and plastic#.
Carry out the design cost them just over a month. Measures taken at the photographs, but the prototype came out somewhat narrow. Both could not stretch my arms and one could stay curled. The final model, eight inches wide, can change position without colliding with the timber.
Least Majorcan Picornell recognizes, is wood: beech German. They find it more resistant than traditional varieties. In combination with llengües fabrics, "supports up to 150 kilos," boasts the carpenter, who in a week can make up to twenty units of his chair craft.
The first were presented during the fair in late March Andratx. His stop was visited by the authorities, including president Bauzá. "I was surprised he was able to distinguish between a real llengües fabric and faux" said the craftsman.
Promotion have continued through his Facebook page #Filats Gandules Mallorquines# and so far have sold thirty loungers. Today, many models are not in stock because work order. Buy the fabrics are finding a major investment, says Picornell.
Pricewise, the carpenter is in line recognizes that "the work they carry, which is all done by hand": "Sure there are cheaper in Carrefour, but not are guaranteed of a craftsman workshop. " Will the chairs with fabric fashion llengües future Majorcan beaches? Time will tell.

Balearic Film Commission is launched by government
Palma.—The Balearic government yesterday announced the creation of the Balears Film Commission whose aim will be to encourage movie-makers to invest in Majorca.
Major international films have already been shot on the island, including Cloud Atlas starring Tom Hanks and Halle Barry.
Also, the major British film studio Pinewood/Shepperton is looking at investing on Majorca and has not ruled out the possibility of building a film studio here. Talks have already taken place with the Balearic government.

The Balears Film Commission will be partly funded by the Balearic government and the Council of Majorca. Already the Council has said that they would be allocating around 80'000 euros a year to the project.

Private funding could also be made available. Film-makers say that Majorca is an ideal location to make movies because of its stunning countryside and good weather.

The Commission should be fully functioning by April and it hopefully it should channel movie-making success into the Balearics.

From The UH translated by Google. Aparcar en Lluc cuesta ahora dos céntimos por minuto y el tíquet no incluye la entrada al museo » Part Forana » Noticias » Ultima Hora Mallorca

From December 23 to park and visit the Museum of Lluc is more expensive or cheaper, depending on whether or not resident (so far not distinguished) and time of stay.
Maximum prices.

The first hour of parking costs two euros and from that moment the payment rate per minute to two cents per minute for the second time to stay. From the second hour the cost is 1.3 cents per minute and set a maximum daily price of 3.98 euros residents (the equivalent of three full hours) and 4.80 euros for non-residents (the equivalent of four full hours). Both sides will pay 1.5 euros extra per person if they want to visit the museum.
Pere Muñoz, manager Santuari defended yesterday that "change fee" is a cheaper for most so far paid four euros and pay two because statistics tell us that 75 percent of people who visit us are on average between one and two hours. "
In contrast, increase their income Santuari each nonresident Santuari visit if the visit exceeds three hours. Tourists will have to pay 4.80 euros if parked more than three hours in Lluc and must pay 1.50 euros (per person, not per vehicle) if you want access during your visit to the museum.
"The changes have been introduced at the request of anyone but because we think it is a fairer system," Munoz explained yesterday who also says that "since the visit to the museum was free people did not value the fund museum and there were days that had 600 visitors in the museum, which was dangerous for the conservation of the museum itself, the fact discriminate who is really interested in visiting the museum and who will not improve security in the museum itself. "

The change in parking rates coincides with the enlargement of the local police service in the municipality will also now monitoring the evenings.

Seems like they are trying to dissuade people from visiting, these charges seem very confusing. We went in the evening last year, it was really quiet and peaceful and no one on the car park gate.:)

To be fair to them Whaley, i think they need to raise money for the upkeep of the place. First there was the damage to the roof when we had the first big storm of winter and last week there was a fire :(.
It's not really that expensive when you compare it to charges for similar "attractions" in the UK ;).

Translated by Google from Los pescadores del Port de Pollença no pueden asumir el pago anticipado que exige el Govern » Part Forana » Noticias » Ultima Hora Mallorca

The fishermen of Port de Pollença can not afford the prepayment required by Government.

The fishermen of Port de Pollença will face later this month prepayment occupancy rates of port facilities for the first half of 2013. Immersed in economic crisis, the sector also sees how in recent years skyrocket recreational fishing competition, demand the Government of the Balearic Islands that the fees are paid by way up, as was the case until the beginning of this term and also evens out the prices that apply in ports not transferred to the autonomous region.
In the first half of 2012 four of the 23 fishermen who work in the port of Pollensa chose to leave the store because they could not meet the payments and the figure could rise now.
Pollença fishermen pay an average of 900 euro year to occupy a warehouse of 13 square meters when a fisherman Alcudia (Port d'Alcúdia is managed by the Port Authority of Islands) pay 140 euros a year for a job in the same area and never do it in advance.
The fishermen of Port de Pollença (Cala Ratjada live an almost identical) reported for months the "unfairness" and are scheduled to meet this week with the CEO of Ports, Antoni Deurero, to address this and other issues.

One of the issues of greatest concern to the industry is to have six months to move the money to occupy the storage (also charge for placing nets and other equipment on the port). So far the Government never had demanded advance payment of the employment rate but the Ministry of Tourism has decided to apply now Esports regulations to the letter. Although fishermen is "hopeful" the meeting this week and have relaxed their complaints, the fact is that the general direction of Ports of the Balearic Government insists that "for the first time in years is what makes the law, which not previously made. "

To be fair to them Whaley, i think they need to raise money for the upkeep of the place. First there was the damage to the roof when we had the first big storm of winter and last week there was a fire :(.

I agree Sparky, but its a fine line, charge too much and you put the visitors off.
