Satellite TV Update

Fitted a Humax freesat box today. The sky box was showing a signal strength of 15% and a signal quality of 40%, The Humax box shows a signal strength of 75% and a signal quality of 66%. This comparison was 10 minutes apart. Needless to say the reception is good. The Humax box has over 140 channels. It was easy to install just removed the leads and fixed them into the appropriate sockets on the new box.No need to alter the dish.
 
Hi Alcanadakid. What main UK channels can you pick up? We haven't got any dish or box yet but are hoping to get something sorted this summer. Can you get any BBC or ITV channels on your setup? What do we need to buy and where? UK or Spain.

This sounds a very good alternative to Sky, did you bring it from the UK? I would like to have the facility to also record from TV (like Sky+) but only have one feed from the dish, I believe that Humax freesat are also doing a machine that is capable of recording would this also need the second feed? I suppose the cheapest option is to go back to VHS - Any other ideas?
 
We've got a Humax HD box which also records, no problem at all, but if you want to record one channel while watching another, you need a second feed. You get the same channels as in the UK, ie all the BBC and ITV channels, 5, E4, More4, Film4 and BBC News 24, but not Five US or Fiver.

Sorry guys still all a bit technical for me!

We have an apartment in Bellesreguard that shares a community dish - we can get BBC 1 and 2 occasionally ITV depending on satellite strength and a few other non subscription channels including sky news.

We have a SKy box left by previous owner but cannot access any subscription channels without a card

Do we receive SKy news through the sky box or staright from the satellite ie does the sky box have any purpose without a sky card?

Is my best option to replace the sky box with a Humax freestat box?

ps where can I get one in PP and how much?

Thanks Sandy, sounds good. Only want to record when I go out so would not need the second feed then. I'll look into the Humax products.
 
I think all the questions have been answered except where I bought it. We chose the Humax box that doesn't record and it cost 145 pounds from Comet. The only channel we miss is Sky news otherwise the free channels are virtually the same as the with a sky box without a subscription. This is certainly going to give Sky a run for their money.
 
Thanks for the tip Mark. we now have Sky News plus a load of other channels. Today my signal strength was 86% compared to a measley 15% on the Sky box.

WE ARE ALSO IN BELLESGUARD - COULD EVEN BE THE SAME COMMUNITY?

CAN ANYONE CLARIFY WHETHER THERE IS ANY NEED FOR BOTH SKY AND ASTRA DISHES PLEASE? IF SOMEONE HAS SKY - CAN THEY USE ASTRA AS WELL? :confused:

WE HAVE A WORKING SKY BOX WHICH GETS THE MAIN CHANNELS, (ITV CHANNELS ARE ALWAYS 'LOST' IN THE EVENING!!) AND WE ARE CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY SKY DISH ON ANOTHER OWNERS' ROOF TERRACE .

THERE IS NO ASTRA DISH ON THE ROOF YET SOME OTHER OWNERS IN OUR COMMUNITY MAY PREFER TO HAVE AN ASTRA CONNECTION.

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF SITING MORE SATELLITE DISHES ON THE ROOF? DO WE NEED THE PERMISSION OF THE OWNER OF THE RELEVANT APARTMENT WHO OWNS THE ROOF TERRACE? WHAT LEGAL RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS ARE INVOLVED?

welcome to the forum but please don't use CAPS - it's the online equivalent of SHOUTING :eek: & very difficult to read.

I'm sure someone may be able to answer general questions on satellite but for legal aspects you will need to discuss with the administrator for Belresguard as it will depend on community rules.
 
Humax Box

I know this has been discussed before but I can't find the information I am looking for

I have an apartment in a community that has a dish

I inherited a sky box when we purchased but I don't subscribe so I only get a few channels and also reception is at best hit and miss with the BBC and ITV channels only being available va regional channels on high numbers right after the "adult" channels


We don't own the dish it is part of the community and I think it must be on the roof .... all I know is that there is a lead currently plugged into our old sky box that is connected to a dish somewhere

How do I know if the dish is an Astra or not and does it need to be a certain type of dish to make it work with a Humax Freesat because we have decided we would be better off with Freesat and have decided on a Humax box but we want to buy it in Majorca

Does anyone know if I can just plug any satalite into one and also where we can get one in Majorca ?

You need to talk to someone who really knows what he is talking about.

I have had some really bad experiences with suppliers in the Port.

I suggest that you contact Sean at Ocean T.V. in Palma.

My experience with this company has been extremely positive.
They only deal with sat. T.V. and have been really helpful to friends who didn't know what to buy.

We have a Humux box that we bought in the UK. It uses the same dish and satellite and so you can plug it straight in. All you do is put in your UK postcode so that it brings up your regional channels as a preference, although all the other regions are available. Reception is much better than with the Sky box but it is not so nice to use menu-wise. Mrs Alcanadakid hates it and so I have both boxes next to each other so we can swap between them. I am not sure whether Humux boxes are available in Mallorca

We had satellite installed in July and bought a Freesat box (not Humax although we have one of tjhose at home) from Confort. They tuned it in for us and it works perfectly. We paid 60 euros because it also takes a viewing card but later found out this is only for Spanish cards. They had one in, without card slot for 40 euros, same brand.
 
Sky TV in the evening

Would anyone know why our reception for ITV suddenly starts to break up at about 8.30pm every evening. Presumably it's the way our (communal) dish is pointing????

Does anyone else have similar problems? Why doesn't it affect BBC?

Its the weather switch to ITV on number 993 ITV London that always works for me same if BBC goes try the 974 and up Hope that helps
