For anyone going out to PP in the near future, there are plenty of shops and supermarkets selling wine and spirits.

We found Caprabo to be the best for choice and value for money. Caprabo is a large supermarket just as you come into PP on the left and has an underground car-park for those hiring cars.

Wines on the second shelf up and higher seemed to be the best value and I noticed a bottle of Pata Negra for about 6 euros. There was a good choice of Mallorcan wines and wines from Spain in general. As a guide, I noticed a Freixenet Cava (demi-sec) for about 3 euros when we had paid 9 euros in the Supermarket Llenaire.

We also visited Mir near to the seafront which is a real Aladdin's Cave!! The wines are on the top floor and I found some very old Rioja up there dating from 1964, 1967 and 1968! Don't be tempted to buy them though! It was far too hot to store wine and the bottles were stored vertically so I doubt very much whether they are drinkable!

Good wines we found were:

Jaume de Puntiro 9.95 euros
Miquel Oliver Muscat 8.95 euros
Son Bordils Cabernet Sauvignon 13.95 euros
" " Syrah 13.95 euros (paid 30 euros in Ca'n Costa)
Macia Batle Blanc des Blancs 8.95 euros

You may pay a little more in here, but the choice is undoubtedly fantastic. Plus you have the benefit of meeting Mr Chuckles. Always a treat...

Dover near to the restuarnt Tango was another good find and was a little like a cleaner and less hysterical Mir.

A fantastic choice of spirits, wines and cigarettes. We noticed a Mont Ferrutx for 5.95 euros and a Macia Batle for 6.15 euros.

Other good supermarkets we can recommend for buying wines are SYP (Eroksi Center) and the Voramar supermarket just behind the Pine Walk.

Happy hunting!
Jane:D

PS Prices apply to week beginning 16 May 2005

Hi Jane, I remember reading some time about a place in Pollensa that you could buy wine filled into plastic bottles.I found it today, and bought a litre of white and a litre of rosado. I know I splashed out a bit, it cost me three euros for the two, but I'm not a stingy guy. Just had my first glass of the blanco, and it didn't kill me (yet), but not too keen on the rosado, but I guess the more I drink the better it will taste.:lol

Hi new PP resident,

as we lost the old post, please can you give directions & if possible a name for this wine shop.

& thanks very mch Jane for reposting this.

Z.

I'll have to check the name of the place in the next day or two, particularly as I've drunk nearly all the blanco. But it is on the opposite corner of the German Estate agent (Engelbert and Humperdink or what ever). It sells flowers etc.
I'll be back, no doubt

Hello Mallorcaboy!

I see you're settling in well then! A litre of blanco under your belt! Not bad!

But I see I'm going to have to do some more educating in August. 3 euros for 2 litres of wine!!!

Do Balaixa charge corkage?

Regards
Jane:D

Hi Mallorcaboy,
It does sound like your settling in well. We are so happy for you.
Cheap plonk out of plastic bottles huh:eek :eek :eek .3 euros for 2 litres. make way make way ambulanceman coming through!!! Sounds like my kinda wine and I want to be at the front of the Que!:rollin . Do they charge you less if you take your empties back?:rollin .
Jane I'd love to share a tasting with you :b :b whilst we drank this stuff:rollin :rollin :rollin . one good thing you can always keep the yucky stuff :x back and use it to strip the walls or add it to your chips :rollin . Oh and the empties don't make as much noise as the glass bottles do when you put the rubbish out:rollin
Looking forward to hearing more from you. Until then keeping enjoying the good life ;)

Things you can do with not great wines that haven't corked and aren't otherwise spoiled:

- make sangria or mulled wine
- make wine vinegar
- store them chilled and use them for cooking
- drink them after you've drunk all the good stuff

If you try the last one remember to drink at least a litre of water before retiring for the night, otherwise the next day won't be so pleasant.

The voice of experience...

I've another idea to add to the list:

Give them away as school tombola prizes!!

Ah, there is a God!!

Jane:lol

Yea quite right and I've won a few of those over the years

I won a bottle of wine once in the girls school Christmas bazaar ( before Caroline and me started going out together;) ) .
Jane may one day be able to tell us what the name of this wine is.
Anyway my youngest runs up to me with a bottle of white wine and says daddy daddy look what the dog won. I thought oh no not another cheap and nasty bottle plonk off loaded at the raffle again. Another parent had won this massive massive tin of roses ( I knew the dog would prefer it if I brought him home those) so I offered to swap her my blue glass bottle of cheap white wine for her tin of roses chocolates. No matter how much of my charm I used I couldn't off load this bottle. So off home I went blue bottle in hand to break the bad news to the dog.
At home I showed it to a friend and told her my story, she just looked at me:eek :eek :eek :eek , " are you off your *&%$*) head! do you know how much that bottle cost???>: , My Uncle drinks this wine and he can only get it through a wine importer it's about £15 a bottle!!!!" I thought " lucky dog>: I wish I'd won it" " maybe I wont tell him, I'll tell him he won a bone and I've to pick it up at the butchers later".
well I opened it on Christmas day ( the dog couldn't grasp how to use the corkscrew) it was out of this world. jane this stuff was the nicest white wine I've tasted. And as you know Jane I don't like white wine.
And also it was a lot less fatting than that tin of roses. the dog enjoyed his bone by the way ;) .
The moral to this story not everything you win at a school bazaar is a white Elephant.
Take care

Rob

My son and his girlfriend flew out to PP on Saturday and spent the day on the beach. However he text me today to say hurricane Rita arrived at 1 am this morning and it was overcast and drizzly today >D But thing are looking up as we told him about the shop which sells the wine out of a huge barrel in 2 litre plastic bottles for 3 €'s.. (he's broke and will be paying off his student loan for the next 50 years :eek ). It's a Torres Jane ,not sure but I think the red is a tempranillo and very nice. They are now sitting on the balcony playing cards, drinking the plonk, eating olives and getting quietly p***ed!

I don't know the name of the shop but if you walk up the front towards the roundabout and take the little alley by the 'tabac' shop it is a couple of doors up on the left hand side (chels) says its the right but he's wrong...I think!? :\

Salut

Just seen on Facebook that Ca’n Vidalet are still doing mail order wine, had a look not expecting them to deliver to the UK, but they do.
Bottles cost 11.50 euros each, buy 5 get 1 free and 18 euros delivery for 6, so ordered 6 Blanc de Blanc and 6 Blanc de Negres, will let you know how long they take. :)
