Has anyone yet tried applying for the the card that gives residents free travel on buses and trains? If so please give details of where and how to apply and how smooth or otherwise the procedure was.

This is the Intermodal Card, which is the standard transport card for residents.
My application at Palma station was a few years ago and it really was very straightforward and a quick painless process. There is now also a local office in Alcudia. It's a shame you just missed the 'pop-up' application that was on the 7th at the Cloisters, Pollença.

The offices will take your photo, no need to provide them with a passport photo.
Complete the application form - included below
ID, passport, driving license or Residencia where the Mallorca address appears or Padron. (as with other official applications, may be best to take all documentation that you have - ring binder accompanies me!)

Although travel is free for residents this year, you will need to load your Intermodal card with a minimum balance (I think €5), in the event of non-tap out when leaving the bus.

I got mine recently from the office in Alcudia. I just took an up to date empadronamiente (?), driving licence, residencia card and passport (I think).
