Hibiscus

We're going back to Puerto Pollensa in late September - having visited twice before.

Our favourite two restaurants were Hibiscus, in the centre of the resort, run by a mother and daughters team, and Los Paroles/Faroles on the beachfront road, run by a very nice man with a receding hairline.

Does anyone know if these two places are still there and if they are still recommended? They were excellent when we visited before.

No takers? 42 views and not a single reply?

I've since trawled through the old threads and seen a fair few complimentary comments about Los Faroles; but not a single mention of Hibiscus, positive, negative or neutral!

We went there 3 times in 1998 and twice in 2000 and each time, apart from an overly-salty Paella, were very happy with the food and service.

Is there something everyone knows about this place but daren't say? Some sort of dark secret? Or is it just not the sort of place anyone on here ever dines in?

Would love to know, either way. Don't be shy!

Sorry you haven't had any replies. I don't think it's for any sinister reasons.

I do remember something about Hibiscus from Smiddy a while or so back. I'll try and find it for you and post a link. I'm sure Smiddy said the meal was good - may have had chateaubriand?

However, last May, almost a year's worth of posts disappeared when the site was hacked. As you can imagine, a lot of very useful and informative posts went.

But let's hope you hear more - we're out soon too and I've never tried either restaurant. There's too many to choose from!

Hi there,
We've been regular visitors to PP for the last 16 years or so and have always had at least one meal at Los Faroles during our stay.
It has always been fantastic I have to say - we usually have the mixed paella which has always arrived fresh and delicious.
But every other meal we have ordered has always been top quality as well.
Sorry, can't cooment about the Hibiscus. Know exactly where it is but have never tried it.
We return this Saturday and fingers crossed will be hitting Los Faroles at some stage!

Chateaubriand rings a bell!

To be honest I'm probably something of a fussy eater and don't like to experiment too much - on our two previous visits I chose places based on dishes I knew I liked and avoided the traditional Mallorquian (sp?) fare. Hibiscus was probably the first time I'd appreciated how good cooking made food I wouldn't previously have eaten, taste delicious.

You must try Los Faroles, highly recommended (and everyone else seems to agree) and a charming host.

Hi RedRobbo, thanks for the reply.

As well as the lovely food and great value at Los Faroles, we really appreciated the attitude of the owner; very friendly and amenable. I'm glad to hear the place is still thriving.

Have a great time and if you fancy it, give Hibiscus a try and let me know if it's still as good as I remember.

Hi keefy,

I've trawled through 17 pages looking for that damn post and not a thing! Had fun reading all the old reviews though...

Either I was imagining it or the post was lost in the Great Hack

I'm sure Smiddy will put me right as to whether he's eaten there or not.

But anyway, we might give it a try when we are out soon! And then I can write about it!

hibiscus was deffo still up and running in May keefy !!!
I/We have never eaten there tho.. we've heard they are choosy about their opening times these days.. don't know how true that is though!!
Please let us know how you get on when you go back there. it may encourage us to pay a visit next time in PP.

Sorry to be the party pooper but in my humble opinion you'd be better off going to La Fortelesa ( same road as Hibiscus)and El Posito ( in town north west of church as you face it off Roger de Flor) . Unless they've changed dramatically since Easter far better restaurants and vying for the same market as those two.

As I say, highly subjective though like all reviews on eating out. One man's meat .......................

Yes it's still there! Nothing has changed, not sure about the exact opening times, but it's always open when we call. We visited twice on our recent holiday and had the usual, Chateaubriand. Well worth a visit. Agree with Bonyslad, but if you're there for a couple of weeks, well worth a visit.

Might have to try the chateaubriand myself when we're out.

Do you know if they still do the dessert which is a sponge-like cake with ice-cream, over which they pour large amounts of Whiskey. (Whiskey Tar-Tar, I've just remembered the name!).

We found the nicer the restaurant, the more generous they were with the whiskey. One place even left us with the bottle to help ourselves!

We've just eaten in both Hibiscus and Los Faroles. Hibiscus was one we'd previously avoided on account of often being empty, but we were pleasantly surprised. It's fairly standard fare, but well cooked and served, and they were very tolerant of our 1 year old daughter.

Faroles we revisited for the first in 18 months, and had a really good meal, one of the best two of the holiday (the other being the ever excellent Cap de Canto). I would say you are best going there if you feel like eating fish, although Mrs TM had a good lamb dish if memory serves me right. When we previously visited (out of season, in Feb), the restaurant was packed with Mallorquins, which I would take to be a good sign...
