GG do you remember Cafe Yum Yum which was next door to Pub Imperial. When Yum Yum was demolished i was convinced PI was going to collapse. Rafa ran it then until his health deteriorated, oddly enough the guys that run it now often call into Nostalgia for a nightcap and a dance after they have closed up. ;);)

Yes Sparky, I remember Yum Yum but do not remember the whole building being replaced - I must look up from my pint occassionally:D

Just for the record for those who do not know Pub Imperial is not British owned but Majorcan

Visited the IMp for the 1st time, entertained by the worst Elvis impersonator ever, but we havent laughed as much in years.

Thanks Siralf - yes Imperial is now Mallorcan owned but originally it was a bar started by a brit - can't for the life of me remember the chap's name though.

Just for the record......!

GG - the first Brit owned pub/bar in the Port was the Bulls Head owned by the Panther family.
The 2nd Brit owned bar was El Barco - owned by ME way back in the very early 70's!

Bar Imperial was never Brit owned - Rafa opened it originally as a night only bar but when Yum Yum closed down he started to open during the day as well to cash in on the gap in the market.

Happy Days!

Like myself, most of the visitors to PP are perfectly happy to sit at the waters edge, glass of vino in hand, waves gently lapping our feet, having quite conversation. But, surely everyone likes to let their hair down now and then, you would not be human if you did not! IMO Nostalgia fills this void perfectly, nothing wrong with a bit of music and good company. If you don't fancy it, as Dionne Warwick would say, "Walk on By".

Quite right , Smiddy.

But do have one concern , thought when you got up to sing it would be like a sackfull of feral cats , but pleasantly surprised . Equally Debs sang like an angel when I heard her .

Do you guys think Colin is using Auto tune ???

I think we should be told !!!!

BonysLad :D:D

I stand corrected and bow to your superior knowledge Gina - I could have sworn it was run by a brit when we used to there - obviously the drinks were far too cheap back then;) - I mean fiscaly and not quality wise!

GG I wouldn't dare to presume that my knowledge was 'superior' to anyone else' - just older!:)

Rafa & Tina are old friends and we all started out together in the days when attitudes and beliefs were so different. But times change and people's needs and preferences change with them - it's natural.

So getting back to the thread in hand - my opinion is that BOTH these establishments provide that extra 'something' which the majority of holiday-makers are looking for. You've only got to see how busy they both are when the rest of the bars are empty. That 'something' in Imperial may be totally different to the 'something' in Nostalgia which is a good thing.
Whatever it is they are both providing people, (most of whom have worked hard all year for their annual break) with 'something' they want!

Sometimes those of us who are fortunate enough to visit PP on a more regular basis (or even live there) tend to forget that this is first and foremost a holiday destination and that the businesses therefore HAVE to cater for that market to make a living! It's a long, long winter!
I for one will be visiting both these establishements next month - can't wait!

(Sorry if that sounded like a 'soapbox' rant)

Well said Gina and yes of course PP is primarily a holiday resort yet somehow it also manages to cater for the expats and locals as well ;).
Hope to see you for a glass or three next month :D.

I agree with that too Sparky. Nostalgia in particular did a very good job of keeping the expats & locals entertained last winter, as did several of the other 'Brit' and Spanish run bars & restaurants which battled on regardless. That's what makes PP so special - whatever the time of year you will always find something happening to suit your tastes - somewhere!

Looking forward to those vinos Lyn!

We once went into Bar Imperial; it was not our cup of tea but it was obvious people were enjoying themselves! Walked by this year when Elvis was on and stopped for a few minutes across the road and laughed out loud! Surely it was a parody?
After the comments on this forum we went into Nostalgia on our first night, we really enjoyed it, my wife was even joining in with the singing - something she never does! I can see that it really does appeal to a wide range of age groups.
Went back 3 or 4 times, but the drinks were more expensive than Bony's!
Will certaily call in again next year.

Apart from a few weeks in February, when they had a holiday, they opened all last winter, it was just in the evenings and they closed on Mondays/Tuesdays. I think they are planning to open again this winter but don't know any details yet, will let you know when i find out. :)

Gina,

We remember the Black Bull, was it Keith Pather that owned it before he had the shop beside what was the Chequered Flag (Now the White Rose/Rosa Blanca) in the original Gommar Apartments?
