A possible lifeline for those of you who will find it hard to do without your UK TV if it disappears at the end of October as suspected.
The UK Freeview service is soon to be made available online. It will not be regionally restricted in the way that the `catch up´services are but you will need a UK TV license to access it - oh and a broadband internet connection of course.

I was about to recommend Patrick Moore, but, sadly he passed away last December. Now, he really did know all about sky.

It has now been confirmed that the new Astra 2E satelite will launch on September 17th. The BBC have also confirmed that soon afterwards they will transfer their channels across from the temporary Astra 1N to the new 2E. 2E is shown on the Astra website as having the same footprint as 2F. In short this means that if you are lucky enough to be receiving Channel 5 then you will continue to receive the BBC channels when they move. No channel 5 then no BBC!

Just picked this up from the website of the launch site -
The authorities at the Baikonur launch site announced yesterday that there will be a further delay to the launch of Astra 2E. Some of the telemetry readings for the rocket's 1st stage were outside the tolerance range. At present, no revised launch date has been published but they are suggesting a delay of possibly 1 to 2 weeks.

Update.

New launch date for the Astra 2E satellite now confirmed as 30th September.

Also - bad news concerning the launch of the Freeview over-internet service that was supposed to solve the TV reception proplems of us expats. It has now gone live but it is anything but freeview.
150€ set up fee
50€ month subscription
Broadband internet connection required - another 40€ a month
UK TV Licence required.

And - there is no `set-top´box it has to be run on a browser platform so you wil need to have a pc, laptop, netbook or other device permanently running.

Can´'t see the point really. There are several cheaper alternatives already available.

Are we really going to be left with no free view BBC and ITV programmes?
I paid a fortune just 9 months ago to get all my set up!!

The quick rule of thumb at the moment is - if you can receive Channel 5 now - then chances are you will still be able to receive the other UK channels when they move to the new satellite. If you don´t have Ch5 now then you will soon loose the rest,

Where did you see this? I've not seen any official information about this, so would be interested to know what this option is. I know there are lots of services like filmon and tvcatchup that may or may not require a UK IP address.
