Safety & Security in PP!!!

So sorry to hear of these incidents, perhaps Puerto Pollensa supermarkets, hotels & apartment hotels should look into installing CCTV cameras. This will probably start a debate
on the forum, but if it deters or helps catch these criminals all for the better. I feel that the
crime rate has risen in the last few years and needs to be nipped in the bud, for the sake of
all of us that find Puerto Pollensa such a unique spot in the world.

Our incident didn't happen in PP but the other end of the island. It is a world we live in that these things happen and they happen anywhere. As been suggested in a previous post it would be good for the supermarkets which are known to have a problem to be pro-active in attempting to sort.

Watch out there are thieves about!!!!

As the season is now upon us can i remind you all to be security minded when you are here, one of our members told me last week that she had a bag stolen .
Thieves don't take holidays so please, please, please don't become a victim, be on your guard at all times.

Bogus gasmen arrested.

Some good news from the DDM here :- La trama de falsos instaladores de gas estafó cuatro millones a 5.000 víctimas - Diario de Mallorca, translated by Google. More criminals taken off the streets but do remain vigilant.

The plot of false gas installers 5,000 defrauded four million victims
The network members came to collect up to 1,200 euros for repairs of faults exist

The plot of false gas installers became disjointed this fraud on a juicy business. The scam reached an amount of four million euros and the number of victims is estimated to be around 5,000.

The Civil Guard have arrested 26 people across Spain on this network of scam artists nationwide for the alleged crimes of fraud, money laundering, intrusion and usurpation of functions. The vast majority, 17, was arrested in Balears. The head of the magistrate court number four of Palma on Friday ordered the imprisonment of 14 of them and the other three were released with charges.

Also, three others involved in this organization were arrested in Alicante, two in Madrid, four in Malaga. They were also charged as other two members of this band.

The modus operandi of false gas installers consisted cited by phone scam people. They were convinced that a review of the facility, although this is not mandatory. The profile of the victim was always very similar. They were older or foreign nationals.

Personates Once at home, false installers detected faults exist. The repair was initially budgeted at about 50 euros to gain the trust of the victim. Then they went up the amount gradually while adding other assumptions were problems that arose. In closing, we loaded the user an exorbitant price of the parts needed, and the visit could reach a sum of 1,200 euros.

When scammers detected that the victim had a higher purchasing power, false installers had no qualms about returning to home and repeat the same operation. Then others were charged 1,200 euros for repair simulated fault.

In finding the existence of a possible organization related to these false gas installers, the Civil Guard activated the so-called 'Operation CH4', referring to methane. The epicenter of this band was in Mallorca-Palma and Inca-mainly, but also identified numerous branches nationwide.

'Operation CH4'
In Balears, the band members had specialized in robbing the pockets of the victims who met the two main requirements seeking: older and foreign nationals. Numerous German, British and Dutch residents on the island suffered the ravages of this organization scammers.

The Civil Guard made numerous records in the offices and homes of members of this organization, supervised by the court in Palma instruction number 11. Institute of Armed agents intervened abundant incriminating documentation of activities of this murky plot.

Officers also spoke eight homes, 25 luxury cars, two motorcycles and numerous large displacement current accounts. All this amount, valued at four million euros, have been acquired with reviews scammed with fake money.

Sorry to restart this thread. It has been dormant for some time, and it isn't with any great pleasure that I find myself re-opening this topic.

We have been over since the start of the month, but our visit has been soured by our villa being broken-into last week.

It is not the first time that we have suffered from theft here, but this was more disturbing as they entered the house via one of the external shutters and during the time that they were inside, managed to physically break open the locked safe.

We have lost cash and some items that were in the safe (thankfully they left passports, credit cards etc), along with some designer sunglasses and perfume, but as the safe is located in our bedroom, it has left us feeling rather uneasy and uncomfortable, particularly at night.

The purpose of my email is really to remind everyone to keep on their toes. The Guarda Civil have been good, and have been out here twice to see what happened and try for fingerprints, but have told us that they continue to see lots of this sort of crime.

Very sorry to hear of your very disturbing experience.

And thanks for the reminder.

I am so sorry this has happened to you Lovemallorca, i know what you are going through having been a victim of a burglary. The GC and police here are always catching the culprits but unfortunately as soon as they take one off the streets more pop up .

On another note, just last evening i had to tell a lady that it was not a good idea to leave her open handbag on the pavement behind her chair, she replied "i don't usually do this".

Please my friends keep your guard up as you do at home and don't become a victim to the criminals.

What's the best number to call if something happens or if you notice something suspicious, Sparky? 112?

Found a flyer on the German consulate which also has information in English -
http://www.spanien.diplo.de/content...ddsicherheitshinweisederspanischenpolizei.pdf

If you are a crime victim, ask for help calling 091 (Police)
Or report it by phone on the 902 102 112 (several languages spoken)

The latter number is also recommended to be called by the British embassy in case your passport is stolen -

British consulate details in Palma -

So sorry to hear of your break in, as well as the loss of property it's the violation of your home especially your bedroom that is so hard to deal with. Hope all goes well.

Sorry to hear that lovemallorca...there's scum everywhere. I was walking around the market 2 weeks ago in old alcudia and i had my passport in my cargo short's pocket (i was about to move over for the last week in PP)...felt a "brushing" against the pocket - but then realised some women was trying to undo me pocket!!! - i pulled her, but she was that relaxed about me confronting her it put me off guard and she was away before i could slap her....or grab her. looking back they work in gangs and had i grabbed her i probably would have been attacked anyway. still a very uncomfortable experience tho'....

Sadly it is the same in many places, I spent Friday in Paris and Saturday & Sunday in Le Mans and everyone kept being reminded to be aware of pick pockets.

I do agree that we behave in a more reckless manner when on holiday - have to hold my hands up and admit that when we were burgled in our villa several years ago I had left my bag on the table in full view of the road outside - with the lockable gates to the villa unlocked and indeed the front door unlocked for good measure. The Guardia Civil said there were gangs who spent every day driving around the countryside looking for likely targets - i.e.. villas that look as if they have tourists inside them.

Having said that, it sounds as if Lovemallorca took every available precaution. It seems so depressing to have to go down the route of installing alarms and security screens - which is what we had to do after a bad burglary in the UK - but the problem seems widespread wherever you go in the world.

I agree

Have just returned from Rome and we were warned to watch out for pickpockets in almost every shop bar and restaurant we visited - and there were many

Also the house next door to us was broken into via rear patio door as we sat on our patio ..... There was quite a crowd of us but it didn't deter the burglars
We actually heard the crashing noise and just assumed someone had dropped something

It feels to me that people are no longer afraid of getting caught they seem so brazen and fearless

Very sorry to hear of your break in

We were burgled at home many years ago and certainly became much more security conscious after the event !

Try to be very careful on holiday and everywhere really but realise these people are very clever at pick pocketing so would never say never

Hope you feel better after this horrible event soon

Thanks so much for all of your kind words. We have had a lovely evening in PP tonight, but have decided to return home tomorrow. Mallorca has always been our haven away from the reality of life, but currently we are not relaxed and enjoying our time here. A holiday should be carefree, but on this one occasion, we would prefer to be elsewhere.
Thanks again for your kind wishes.

P.S. - for what it's worth, a safe is fine and is usually what insurance companies stipulate but, IMHO, hiding things well is better. If a thief finds your safe, and 99% of the time they're located in the wardrobe of the main bedroom, then they've got everything of value? A burglar wants to be in and out in as short a time as possible, they don't want to be spending time searching around for stuff.

Just my humble view of course!

I think that there is a lot of sense in what you say.

What we have learnt is just how vulnerable some of the safes are. The commonly found key or code operated box safes are really intended for documents, and once you know where to attack them, can be breached relatively easily.

I won't go into the details of how they did it, but with a few tools from the shed, I am confident that I could do something similar.

My recommendation to anyone with property is to review the type of safe that you have installed and also if you are renting a property, ask what type of safe is provided for your use.
