Some of you may recall me mentioning (a year ago)that due to Caixa Bank charging non eu customers 35 euros per month just to have an account, I decided to cancel my account and use Revolut to pay my bills.

However, I discovered that my attempts to set up direct debits or even just transfer to spanish accounts were thwarted at every turn. It became hugely frustrating, as I literally had to withdraw cash when in the port and pay into my Community funds at a Colonya Branch, as it wouldn't accept a Revolut transfer. I couldn't eben pay my local taxes. Eventually I discovered that Colonya only charged something like 24 euros per 3 months, so decided to open an account and de-stress my life.

However, once opened, I immediately discovered that a Revolut transfer into my new account just wouldn't work.........AAArrgh! However, it was when discussing this with the bank, they suggested delaying the payment, so setting it up for the next day, which I tried........and it worked! Which then made me wonder if I tried delaying the payments to my community administrators, perhaps that might work....and it did!

So now I'm wondering if I actually need my new Bank Account if I can just delay my Revolut payments to pay my bills and taxes etc. Obviously its not a huge sum, so will keep it, but just passing on this miserable experience, so others may learn from it. 😔

Is it just a matter of changing the payment type to 'regular' instead of 'instant' in Revolut, or whatever terms they are using? Instant could be the default and the one the Spanish banks are charging for. Though that might very, depending on the bank.

I owe you a pint Rockape. You've saved me a load of agro. I hate paying Sabadell €40 every other month and was considering going to Caixa who are about 100yds from my house in Pollenca... but for €35 a month I'll stick with Sabadell a bit longer...

I bank with Caixa and I’m charged €35 per quarter, not monthly. I find them really efficient and friendly to deal with, and their service is very much aimed at making banking as easy as possible for Brits, so I’m more than happy to pay that charge. I wonder why your charge is monthly?

Colonya charge (or have been) €15 a quarter.
This includes the use of their credit/debit card, their text messaging service, an email for every transaction made or received and a monthly email statement of your account.
Last but not least, at Christmas you are handed a very nice calendar and an excellent almond turron.

Hmm...pretty sure it was per month, but no idea now, as I was never sent a statement. Anyway, Colonya is €24 per qtr I think and is very friendly and helpful and as Charles said, you get a very tasty Turron and calendar at Christmas.

By coincidence I have just received an email from Colonya, specifying the charges I paid during 2025, which were as follows:

Per quarter €15
Per standing order €0,50
Per bank transfer €1,00
Per SMS €0,14

As I previously mentioned, they automatically send me an email whenever a debit or credit is made to my account (card payments by instantaneous SMS), as well as a monthly email including the statement of same account.

Thank you for this. My revolut transfers stopped working a few months ago. I have followed your advice for a scheduled payment. Let’s see.

We bank with Caixa and are charged 35 euros every quarter not monthly. Well worth it for the service we get.
Agreed. Was in there today to open an account for my elderly mother and they couldn't have been more helpful. They did discuss the 35 euro a month option but since she will be receiving a regular payment into the account they said that there would be no charge. Highly recommended.

Wonderful bank. With so many restaurants only taking tips in cash (thanks to tax rules) Ingot cash from Caixa’s dispenser but they only issue 20s and 50s, but the staff willingly changed into 5s and 10s for me. In a British bank at best you’d be made to feel a nuisance…….if you could actually find a high street bank! Been with Caixa for over 8 years and absolutely no complaints at all.
