Thats funny. Nearly everybody I have spoken to today has told me that they really like the way the beach looks without anything on it.
Some people have taken their own brollies and beds but the majority just have a towel and a large hat.
Seems most prefer to spend the money saved buying drinks in the beach bars.
Mind you the weather still isn't summery and probably won't be for another few weeks, which by then the beach will be full of stuff.

Nothing funny about this at all ! Not sure who you spend your time meeting during the day but my guess is they don't use the beach . The majority of holidaymakers do hence why so many beds and umbrellas are laid out , it's an absolute nonsense that the council have failed to get this right.

Why do you keep defending a situation which is inexcusable?

Of course the beach looks great without beds.....but it is a beach in a resort not a desert island!

So looks like no beds and brollies for us next week, still if it keeps some local expats happy that's fine. And when half the tourists stop coming and the bars and restaurants don't make any money that's fine. When you end up living in a second rate ghost town that's fine.

Believe me you only have to read posts on FB about this to see that the vast majority of residents, tourists and business owners are not happy. This is because they can see the harm that is being done to PP and it's economy.

I have just messaged the ajuntament and UMP again, here is what i wrote :-

Hola, si us plau em pot dir si el contracte per a la gestió de la platja ha estat guardonada amb tot i si no quan va a ocórrer això, gràcies per endavant.

This is the message in English :-

Hello, please can you tell me if the contract for the management of the beach has been awarded yet and if not when will this happen, thank you in advance.
.

I will let you all know if i get any response ;).

We don't use the bed and brollies, as I would rather spend the money on other things. I suppose growing up having holidays in Cornwall, to me its normal to lie on a towel rather than a sunbed.

This is the reply from the ajuntament  :-

Quan acabi el procés de licitació segons la normativa vigent es podran explotar les platges amb els lots de gandules i sombrilles.

When finished the bidding process under current regulations can be exploited beaches with lots of sun beds and sunshades.

Here is the response from the UMP :-

Hola Lyn, La licitación de las playas, según nos informaron ayer, se publicará en el BOIB este jueves próximo por vía de urgencia. Saludos

Are these the same people who had the same opinion about the front paseo renovation, and now think it´s the best thing since sliced bread ?.

I think that when this is all over, the council should put a note in their diary to renew the "Beds and Brollies" contract in Autumn.

I cannot imagine any commercial organisation being so slack as to leave the renewal until so close to when implementation is due.

Retail businesses buy for Christmas a year in advance, so why such a key contract is left right until the very last minute is borderline negligence.

Perhaps the opportunity should also be taken to align the provision of sunbeds from April until early November. Whilst not everyone will use them at the beginning and end of the season, some should certainly be there.

In our younger days we also lay on the sand but having had a muscle illness I would have trouble getting up again if I lay down for too long ! At home we would take our own beds but quite happy to pay for the privilege of a bit of comfort on holiday Perhaps MdR would prefer holiday makers banished from the beach to make it look more attractive as well !!

It does seem ridiculous that it is now summer and they arent out People who collect the fees have told me in the past that they work for the company year round doing repairs etc so this must be very unsettling for them

To be able to renew the contract, they first have to apply to the central government Costas agency something that can´t be done before January of the same year.

Presumably, as they have just applied ( in January like everybody else ) for a 3 year contract and this has been approved, they will no longer have to apply again until 2019, so things should run more smoothly from now on.

Also, and as mentioned before, Pollensa town hall apply to Costas themselves, which then allows them to pick and choose the people who will be in charge of maintaining the beach, unlike other councils who don´t have a say in the matter, the decision being left to Costas, i.e. central government.

I know which system I prefer.

Molt

Have just found out that it is for 4 years, so they won´t have to apply again until January 2020

Oh dear it looks like there could be delays this year, the new contract for the beach management concession has yet to be awarded . I do hope we don't end up with the same situation we had 3 or 4 years ago but here is a translation of this report Preocupación entre los restauradores de Pollença por el retraso en la gestión de playas » Part Forana » Noticias » Ultima Hora Mallorca

Quote:
Concern among restaurateurs Pollença for the delay in beach management.

The newly created Association of Restorers of Port de Pollença wants to show his " indignation and impotence before a fact that is becoming common in the beaches of the municipality of Pollença, is that while most municipalities already have assembled or are about to mount the facilities of the beaches, in the town of Pollença, for the second time in four years, will have mounted their facilities for Easter, indeed, the town Council told us they will not take place until May 1st. "

The association believes that "this will badly affect the image of the municipality if, in addition, one considers that the works have not finished the ride."

The project involving the beaches just come to public exposure and provides important new features, among others, the elimination of skiing, the water park and the 'churro' and the obligation to clean the beaches that are not exploited, plus service lifeguard.

The Councillor for Environment, Tomeu Cifre Bennàssar, recognizes that the beaches are not allocated at the beginning of the season. "It is something that every time a new specification is happening," he says.

Encrypt Bennàssar says, however, that regardless of who is awarded the service or not, the City Council will be responsible for paving the beaches and put in place before the start of the season. The explanations do not convince the restorers .

Thanks for the explanation of the system Molt.
If the January application date is why the contract cannot be put in place in time for the season beginning, then one would hope that a discussion would be had to set a more practical deadline with the Costas Agency.
The current system seems to be working against a timely outcome, rather than supporting it - Madness when one considers the importance of tourism to the region's economy.

Where do you get that information from? Are you doing a census on this as you seem very well informed?

What a wonderful sight!
The green tractor has just cleaned the beach in front of Little Italy! :D and is continuing the clean up operation towards the Illa D'Or Hotel.
