new tex mex

What basically happened was that The Tex Mex guy seemed to be hoovering up all the businesses in The Port and was after the fishing cottage at the start of the pinewalk. Some on here were horrified at the thought of this cottage being turned into another Tex Mex. My take on it was and still is that the public gets what the public wants and if they didnt want it the business would fail. The tex mex guy still owns it as far as I know although it isnt a Tex mex anymore.

The demise of O Lume is a great example of this IMO. A restaurant that was highly rated on here didnt seem to set the heather on fire with others (certainly any time i was in it was quiet) and ultimately it failed. On the other hand the tex mex guy seems to go from strength to strength. There is room in PP for all tastes IMO but to be honest some people on this forum are quick to rubbish the less salubrious establishments when in reality it seems to be them that ticks the boxes for your typical PP holidaymaker.

Great - Thanks Hoopy!

Yes and no! Mr TexMex buys up prime spots which pick up a lot of custom with 1st time visitors who are blissfully unaware of the better restaurants in PP, it's centralised catering, all pre-prepared in advance and delivered to the individual restaurants, not exactly market sourced produce! Good restaurants survive by providing good quality food and service, and the customers return year after year, it would be interesting to know how many actually return to these restaurants, Tex-Mex probably ain't all that bothered wether people return or not, the next bus load is on it's way from Palma airport.

Didnt work for O'Lume though did it! which is shame

Tex Mex survive - In your opinion that must make them a good restaurant?!

Me and my family have been coming to PP for many years.i'm not a fan of fast food(Tex Méx) but they must work or he wouldn't keep opening them....he invest ALOT in every place he has.PP has been changing for years,so we will all just have to like it.There are many good restaurants in PP to choose from many not mentioned on here...I never went to o'lume but i do fill for The owner who is now going to LZ to work ,maybe he wouldn't of had to close if he'd had as much interest in the restaurant.

Having Read the last few post's, I'm off to " Batten down the hatches ":). I feel a storm coming on If you get my meaning ;)

Now I know summer is coming, the annual Tex Mex debate is rearing it's ugly head again ! Seriously though, the comments about people visiting PP might not be wanting "fast food" but more authentic cuisine runs into a problem I think when you see the popularity of AI, now appearing at several hotels in PP and the growth of the "kiss me quick hat" type shops which now well outnumber anything else in the town. That is to say the demographic of the visitors is changing as are their tastes and maybe Grupo Boulevard has got the feel of it better that many folk think.

Sadly Tonsyl, I believe you've hit the nail very squarely on the head!

Demographics will improve this year, first year for I think for about 10 years we're not coming, off to Girne in Northern Cyprus, much cheaper!!

Far from rearing its ugly head surely debate is good and promotes interest?

I agree with you that the tex mex guy (Grupo Boulevard???) may have got it right and seems to have his finger on the pulse. Certainly his group seems to be going from strength to strength.

Unfortunately there are people on this website who somehow think that if you can only afford AI, like a beer in a sports bar or fancy some Tex mex grub then you are some form of underclass and are dragging it down. All the above do not represent what PP is about say they and has been about over the years. However IMO they are wrong. PP like every holiday resort has to evolve, adapt and keep up with what modern holidaymakers want. Britain at the moment is on its knees and some holidaymakers do want to spend less but still enjoy a beautiful resort that gives them what they are looking for. Surely there is room within PP to cater for all and not just a select few?

Bigjohn is I imagine, one of many who this year chooses to make his hard earned cash go further. I cant blame him and if PP doesn’t evolve there will be many more like him Im sure.

I wish teh new Tex Mex every sucess and hope it succeeds bringing more people to that side of the marina.

Hoopy, Nobody is having a pop at so-called "underclass" can we drop that one for starters? Comments like that I personally can do without. Of course, there is room for every form of taste, all some posters are concerned about is how many of these type of restaurants do we need before PP loses it's well earned charm, too many and your "beautiful resort" might eventually not look so beautiful.

No Smiddy, I wont drop it or retract my comment. Have a reread of the AI thread at the PP or the sports bar thread of a couple of years ago or the thread about the TM guy taking over the fishing cottage at the start of the pinewalk and come back to me.

Lets have a look at the TM guys establishments and what they bring to the port.

Dakota? Been there dunkeys years, seems busy everytime Iv passed and seems to be a success. Pretty tacky but its right across from Bonys so thats tacky corner sorted.

Cafe Algar? Lovely cafe situated in the square which is always mobbed. Not cheap IIRC.

The tobacconist beside Centric? Never closed, great to buy a paper, nice and bright, modern and welcoming.

The restaurant where the fishing cottage was (cant remember its name). Busy, bright and far from tacky.

Does he own Cafe 1919??? Any more??

With respect Hoopy, spending less doesn't necessarily mean eating in a TexMex type restaurant rather than a more traditional one. Likewise the sports bar type place for drinks.

I certainly agree that these places are catering for a demand - and if the demand isn't there then they will fail. However, many of us who have been coming to PP for a number of years can see little bits of the port's charm being nibbled away at, to the point that it may well be in the future that all we're actually left with is the beautiful bay - with the town being just like any other cheap, 'fast food / kiss me quick' Spanish resort. :(

PP is unique in a way, parents have went over the years with their children, the children continue to go as they grow older, they have families of their own and bring their own children and so it goes on, all attracted by the charm of the place. Would that attraction still be there if there was an abundance of fast food restaurants? I doubt it, as it then becomes to similar to many other (cheaper) resorts. They may as well chose them.

So what can be done about it?

Mrs Pep and I are fortunate - we can afford to come to PP for a week per year and eat out at good quality restaurants. That will come as a surprise to a couple of posters on here who seem to think I'm on some secret mission to turn PP into Blackpool (no disrespect to Blackpool!!)

In order to do that we have to choose a hotel that offers B&B or a self catering apartment The accommodation for the 2 of us costs about £1200 and then for eating out at good quality restaurants it costs us a similar amount again for one week

Some people we know think we are bananas!! £2500 for a week in Spain - you could go somewhere nice instead they say.

People simply can't afford it these days. I work in a job where I am giving food vouchers out to people who are working full time because they can't afford to eat!!!

The choice as I see it (although there is no real choice) is to accept that PP will have to change, hopefully not too much, and accommodate some slightly more downmarket restaurants and bars than some would like or stroll along the front and pine walk past empty shops and restaurants that I am sure would end up driving even more people away because of the bleak and desolate atmosphere it would create

Given that choice I know what I would choose

Good old heated debate! Of course you can view your opinion Hoopy. I'm one who has said I don't like AI or tacky Irish themed bars etc. and I'm not a snob - had to work hard for what I've got.

The point is this, tacky Brit bars, English breakfasts and food restaurants everywhere have their place but I believe PP is different. It is smaller and more authentic with a wonderful charm. Anyone can visit here but it will change if it becomes too tacky and will just become another Spanish resort with no identity. Does everyone want that?

I think what we are all forgetting here guys is that the new Tex Mex is replacing a kebab shop!!!!!!

Surely everybody must agree that that is progress or is it just the TM guy that people on here dont like ;)

It seems to me that there is a lot of agreement here. Most of us have been coming to PP for many years and we know what we like about it. Its got beautiful beaches, welcoming locals ,the wonderful pine walk, fabulous facilities on the water, its not too big( this in part to the amazing foresight of previous municipal councils who didn't allow developments to go to high), and it has good mix of restaurants to meet everyones needs. The concerns that have been expressed are about where its going ? Even Hoopy, recognising that tacky corner exists in the square, would I'm sure not want it to become a tacky port which is most peoples concern, I'm sure we all probably agree on that as well. Finally whatever your viewpoint we can also probably agree that there is little we can do to stop market forces creating whatever the future has in store. To this end I take satisfaction that the Tex Mex with the Indian didn't last 5 minutes on the corner of Pine Walk, and the current restaurant in its place is no different to most along the front line. Whilst a particular fan , particularly in the winter of the kebab shop, it doesn't seem to me that replacing it with a TexMex right next door to a Burger King is marking a huge turning point in the character of the port. The expansion of Brisas Marina, the opening of C'an Josep, the refurbishment of Los Faroles, the opening of Casa Vila are all much in keeping with the status quo and all have happened in the past few years. I trust that the natural order of events will be maintained and that if the european economy ever improves we will see more new and exciting eateries open up which we can all enjoy.

Correct me if I am wrong but is TM not replacing Tango

In PP their are many places where you can eat as dear or a cheaply as you want to pay take El Posito 9€ for MDD other places also do these prices, so lets not say TM is a cheap place to eat doubt it.
