Renovation of The Square

Having seen the parts of the 'renovations' to the Square which have been completed I can't say how disappointed I am. The stonework (and cement of which there is a lot) for the new crazy paving is of an incredibly poor standard compared to the original which it haphazardly adjoins and the finish of the pointing is third rate in comparison.

Such a shame. They are now working on the (Tramuntana winds) feature in the centre of the square.

What a shame indeed....I must admit from looking at Sparky's photo's I didn't hold out much hope that it would ever look as good as it did in the photo's I posted some good few pages back!!.....maybe it will in time!
Would seem such a shame to have spent all that money and the job not done to a good standard.

Took some pictures which I will post, square looking great, as with all new stuff it will take time to blend in, with the rain it should help to settle all the dust and wash all the excess cement away, just barriers around the middle now, flower beds looking great and planting has started. With it being more open now it should be great in the summer, kids already running around having fun again. One thought I had was whether they are going to let the restaurants have tables in the new area, that would look great and free up some of the path around which got very tight last year, does anyone know?

That may be so but apart from the central 'Tramuntana winds' feature which remains fenced off the 'renovations' are virutualy complete. Most of the Square is already open to the public and, I am sad to say, the workmanship is third rate for the amount of our local taxpayer money which has been expended upon it AND, more importantly, compared to the quality of the previous workmanship (some of which remains and which it haphazardly adjoins). I am very disappointed.

I'm sure most tourists in the mass of the high season won't notice, care or know any different but it is a shame and wasted opportunity nonetheless.

We too were a little disappointed...I thought that we would see some some changes but apart from old and new crazy paving and smaller fenced areas there is not much to say really...still I suppose it will look different in the height of summer with more people

The little bs certainly are, running all over the newly seeded garden squares. They'll be as bald as a badger's arse in a couple of weeks !

Be unlikely for any extension of restaurant tables / chairs because the number of external places is strictly controlled by the size of the inner footprint of the establishment by the Council. That's why Bonys tables and chairs are packed into that tight area immediately outside. Was there when the Keystone Cops busted Jose a couple of years ago when he encroached over the footpath adjacent to the garden.

Must say bit personally underwhelmed by the whole square refurb. I think the work was mainly about upgrading the drainage system and the square upgrade a bit of an afterthought.

Not very imaginative IMO, they could have put in a few arty features. Even a couple of statues of local heroes ( modesty forbids me from suggesting names !! ) wouldn't have gone amiss.

Sorry to ramble on but what else is there to do on a wet Easter Sunday afternoon!!

Your right Bonyslad, bars and restaurants are unlikely to get extra tables and the works are mainly drainage upgrading. I poped into the guinness club to see Jose the other night and could not belive how dark and uninviting the square is at the moment, once again our town hall have made a right pigs ear of things

That's a great idea. I can just see a statue of Jose there . As hero's come, they dont come any bigger.

Work recommenced on the square and surounding roads today. The drain areas were being finished and then I think we will see the tarmac lorry . In the square they have removed all of the central compass area ,wait to see whether they rebuild or what replaces it. Some other ?electrical work being done on the outer areas of the square.

It just looks a bit tidier than before but hardly a dramatic change.

This seems to be the general opinion. I think we were all misled by the title of this thread - "Renovation of the Square". Perhaps it should have a more interesting title such as "surface water drainage upgrades", or " below ground infrastructure refurbishments"

IMHO the improvements they have made by removing some of the fencing and replanting the flower beds and putting in extra trees have made a difference and the square looks much better for it. I think people should wait and see it for them selves when it is finished, all the new lights in and full of tourist enjoying themselves.

I don't think Car77 deliberately mislead anyone when he started this thread, the council announced a "reformar" of the square, the translation of the word reformar is :- to reform, change, alter or repair, surely refurbishment means almost the same thing. As often happens maybe we got a little lost in translation.
James was not correct in saying the local tax payers money has been spent on it as the money came from Madrid.
As to what has actually been achieved in the square I will reserve my judgement until the job has been completed.

Hi Sparky... I don't want to be too pedantic but the money spent by the council from Madrid also ultimately comes from the pockets of permanent and part-time Pollensa and PP resident tax payers - and the 2010 tax demand is payable now !

Point taken James, i should have said "the money did not come directly from the Town Hall coffers" . That would have been impossible as they are empty and have been for a while .

I do agree with sws that we should let the works be finished and then see the difference. The square definitely looks more open.
