Well it is an impossible task to please everybody  but a lot of the old lights were full of rust so they had to be replaced and i prefer these to the fluorescent lights in Alcudia.

Thanks for pics Sparky. I noticed the roads are being tarmaced. Has this caused any parking problems and is work still going on?

Adios

Dave

As I said "Many will like them" just thought they would be replaced with something similiar, more in keeping with the area, these seem far too modern, IMO only, never having seen the ones in Alcudia, I can't compare.

You are welcome Dave, yes it has caused parking problems but as i say "you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs". It is really strange because the roads look narrower now (i will try to explain), before, the tarmac went from kerb to kerb, but now there is about a foot of concrete beside the kerbs then the tarmac. Does that make sense to you?, anyway i think the roads in the Port are almost finished but there is still a long way to go in Gommar .

IMHO I think they are right to go more modern with the lights, I never liked the old ones, they looked like belisha beacon and were trying to be too twee. In the town they have modern lights and they look fine in the older setting.

In the town they use the square for what it is designed for, its a public space, its for the public to use for markets, concerts, fiestas and just to meet up, in the port when the put all the fences up it stopped it from being a similar open public space. I am pleased they have once again made it a large usable space and lets not forget the majority of the port is new and has no real history, I think it is right to be contemporary and not to try to harp back to a time in history that the port doesn't have. Its peoples opinions and if you ask 100 people to choose lights for the square you will get 100 different choices, so you can never win. Anyway are these the final design or an interim measure, didn't BL say they had to wait until later in the year for the actually ones to arrive. As I say, just my opinion

Yup,

Those big sodium johnnies won't be here till Oct!:D

That's what I was told but will do a little more enquiring .

BL :)

.......I knew some folk would like them! The lights in the town aren't quite so bad I must say!

Sorry Sparky it was my fault, in Favies defense I think her question refereed to the fact that I said most of the square are new buildings, the church is of cause old, but I still think the new lights will complement the church, back on topic were the lights on last night, did it look better?

Whoopps sorry just seen the pics from last night, still looks dark what did it feel like?

My camera is not very good with night time shots SWS, those pics make it look darker than it actually is. It all looks much better in real life and i am quite impressed.

Its the same with most cameras, glad its better, it was very dark!! Compass looks good as well, cant wait to see it finished now.

Sparky, I agree it is looking good, lets hope the new bins get used. People sitting on the benches in the sun this lunch time.

Oh!! yes Lollipop i had forgotten to mention the new stainless steel bins and as you say lets hope people use them. ;)

Hi Sparky,
Thank you for putting the pictures up of the rennovations in the square, I think it looks wonderful. Only 14 more sleeps to go and I will be there to check out all the improvements for myself!

That is very gracious of you sws.....thankyou!:) That is excactly how it was. Just wanted a date! Also thought it was a continuation of the thread, regarding the new lights merging in with the older buildings, or not!! Don't really understand why my apology for going "off thread" and thanking you for your quick response to my question was deleted!!
Anyway, onwards and upwards.....(to keep on thread) I am sure our experience of the "New Square" will be as enjoyable as always.
PS Hope the new thread created "History of the Port & it's Buildings goes well.:)

Sparky - and others - re post number 244, I watched the workmen doing the concrete bit on the edge of the roads outside my apartment a couple of weeks ago.

I wondered why myself so I mused over it and then thought I bet it's to do with drainage. If you notice it's slightly angled towards the footpath so I can only assume that's the reason?

Concrete is less porous than asphalt so the water would run more naturally towards the drains.

My 2 penneth worth anyway.....unless we have any highways engineers on the forum!!!

Yes Nick i think you are correct, it's strange though how it gives the impression that the roads are much narrower. Hopefully this new drainage system will finally put an end to the flooding in the square and surrounding areas.

Good info as always Sparky. Can you please let me know when the footy nets have been put up.

Thanks Sparky, its looking good now.
Must say those trees on the left in the last pic look very tempting as goals. :)

LOL @ Labore and Cheryl, it is going to great to see the kids playing football again.
I think at the moment there are far too many political posters and banners up but once the elections are over they will be gone.
